2010-12-11 23:29:00 | Before I get started, two things: 1. There are probably other threads on this, for that I apologise, but I did look first and didn't really see anything obvious. 2. I know that converting DVD to AVI can be considered wrong, illegal etc, but I think I have a reasonably valid reason for doing what I am doing. I am trying to convert all of Stargate SG-1 to AVI. I have all the DVDs, real ones, duplicates in some instances. I want to do it in the highest quality I can achieve from the DVDs. The main reason for this is that the full 61 discs isn't very portable and twice while taking one disk out of the book thing, I have had many slip out and crash on the floor. I don't like this. Also, I hate the anti-piracy warnings and interactive menus and as a legitimate owner of the set I don't really understand why the product I enjoy should mean a worse experience than that enjoyed by others who aren't quite so legitimate. I find the AVIs very convenient, while the box set is nice enough just staying put on the shelf. I have been using a program to do this quite satisfactorily, but disc 5 of season 2 won't convert with any sound. I have tried everything, including duplicating the DVD to another DVD, removing other soundtracks except English, it plays fine. Convert that to AVI, still no sound. So far all other discs seem to have worked. I have converted other DVDs that I own with this program, also. I am struggling to find another program on the web that will convert DVD video to AVI that is for sale somewhere that looks credible, safe, useful, etc. I don't mind paying, very open to suggestions. Thanks in anticipation. Finackles

2010-12-12 01:09:00 | I agree with Finackles. If I buy a DVD which has an annoying anti-piracy warning why the hell should I watch it? I BOUGHT the DVD. I don't NEED to be told not to pirate it because I DIDN'T PIRATE IT. The Anti-piracy message in that case, is redundant and pointless. But on the other hand, if I pirate the DVD, I will remove the anti-piracy message. Therefore, it's again pointless and redundant. If anything, it promotes piracy\illegal copying because you don't want to look at the stupid anti-piracy messages!

2010-12-12 03:11:00 | Viewing the priacy message is a pain, but welcome to the real world. BTW I have the whole Star Trek Voyager series as will as the whole Battle Star Galactica series darned if I'm going to convert them to AVI. :)

2010-12-12 03:19:00 | The whole of BSG and Voyager? I would AVI them big time. I have all of Star Trek TOS, and I did them all, successfully I think, although two episodes failed and I had to source another copy of the same disc to resolve it (try replacing a disc in a box set from anywhere, it's never going to happen). I have tried AutoGK, same result, no sound. This suggests that the program I am using is not at fault. I am wondering whether this disk has somehow mislabelled the languages. I did notice that English was third whereas was first on other disks. Am going to try something else with existing tools. I didn't want to start a flame war about ridiculous protection that disadvantages the legitimate owner, I think we all know how futile that is. it is the reason why I refuse to update or run the genuine windows license disadvantage crap. Another example where the legit either refuse to check because they know they are legit and non-legit don't because they know they don't. I honestly can't imagine why anyone would try running a dodgy copy of windows (the real copies are dodgy enough already).

2010-12-12 05:59:00 | here we friggin go again :groan: I don't mean I wouldn't watch the DVD, I just don't want to watch the anti-piracy message . If I buy the DVD, why would I want to be forced to watch an anti-piracy message telling me not to pirate something I just purchased and which I didn't pirate? How would you like it if every time you drove your car sober, you had to first sit through 5 minutes of a policeman telling you not to drive drunk? It just makes absolutely no sense . Childish ? Guess there wont be many DVD's purchased then eh! Exactly my point! The message is designed to STOP piracy . Does it work in this case? NO .
