1112091 2010-06-21 10:01:00 Are these available in NZ?
www.amazon.com
Can't find any after extensive googling, surprising given that wood burning stoves/fires are so common here.

1112092 2010-06-21 10:11:00 I find grep to be an excellent tool for splitting logs

edit: or have I "logged" on to pcwood.co.nz by mistake ;)

1112094 2010-06-21 10:43:00 You can get splitting axes and wedges from places like Mitre 10 and chainsaw/mower shops. The splitting axes with a fibreglass handle are good. I also have a 6 ton hydraulic splitter which takes the hard work out of it  Terry Porritt (14)

And a wedge like the one in the link if mounted on the log splitter would hopefully give you four pieces of timber in one hit rather than using three hits.

Another answer is to go to an engineering workshop and see if they can make one. Likely to cost more but!

1112097 2010-06-21 11:11:00 When I lived in the Maruia Valley, we used
a splitting axe with a small triangle each side of the edge
this made the Cherry Beech, Birch or more correctly, Notofagus Truncata
fly apart with very little binding.

1112098 2010-06-21 11:16:00 I use a splitting axe and they are dynamite! No point in wasting time with wedges, you have to start them first, then hit them accurately to get the right effect.

One swipe with a sharp splitting axe will shatter even knotty wood, and if it gets stuck in green wood you can whack it on the head with a sledgehammer.

Cheers

1112099 2010-06-21 12:07:00 I'm so pleased I don't use indoor heating fuelled by wood any more. I don't have to keep firewood dry. I don't have to go outside to get the firewood. I don't have to collect, split, stack said firewood. I don't have to keep my chainsaw sharp and in fact I sold it. I don't have to dispose of ash left in the wood burner. I don't have to have a trailer to transport firewood so I sold that too which saves on Reg and WOF. The firewood was free so all I had to do was the above tasks.

About the only thing I miss was the sound of very hot water landing on the roof as there was a wetback in the wood burner. Not having to get a chimney sweep in was a plus as well now that I think about it.

I now live in a Pensioner flat which has no wood burner but is insulated top and bottom. All electric here. My one and only heater is a 1500w bar heater in the Lounge.

But what about the Power bill I hear you ask even though you didn't.

Got one for $73.28 on the 18th June 2010. This does include my prompt payment discount.
