1161925 2010-12-15 20:59:00 Have been using Avast Antivirus program for years quite happily but removed it because I was advised that only one anti virus program should be used and that MS essentials was all needed. However I read in PC World etc that MSE is slow and misses many malwares compared to Avast and other anti programs. So should I remove MSE and go back to Avast (or another free program)? Any advice appreciated. Krad (7878)

1161927 2010-12-15 21:18:00 Perhaps search previous threads, where both AV's have been heavily discussed (at least 2 threads), by several PF1 members. kahawai chaser (3545)
1161928 2010-12-15 22:11:00 I'm happy with MSE. Snorkbox (15764)
1161929 2010-12-15 22:17:00 I used Avast for a year or two. It was ok.

I now use MSE and have no intentions of changing.

1161930 2010-12-15 22:38:00 Have the issues with MSSE slowdowns/high CPU use on some PC's been resolved, or still ongoing??

MS have had several attempts at AV software over the years, I have to wonder how long before MSSE is quietly shelved/no longer actively supported.

1161931 2010-12-15 23:01:00 V2 may fix the high CPU usage. There is a beta of it. Dont know if anyone can get it tho. Speedy Gonzales (78)

1161933 2010-12-16 00:22:00 V2 may fix the high CPU usage. There is a beta of it. Dont know if anyone can get it tho. if you look around, you can Get it (www.ghacks.net) -- Links about half way down the page - someone uploaded to a file sharing program.

Just trying it -- Current version from MS (www.imagef1.net.nz) -- From those links Version 2 (www.imagef1.net.nz) -- it asks to turn on the windows Firewall when installing. Task Manager when Idle (www.imagef1.net.nz) and When Scanning (www.imagef1.net.nz). of course this is on a workshop XP media PC, P4 3.0 with 1 GB RAM -- so only playing about, but even when scanning it didn't really effect any other actions relating to speed.

Yes, on a few PC's. I stopped after a Vista PC was ground to a halt by it.
