1161825 2010-12-15 06:17:00 HI

I've got my laptop set up so that when the lid gets shut it goes to sleep and that's what happens every night. This has worked well for the last couple of years but recently, when I open it in the morning and start to do things (especially on the net), the CPU use reading goes up to 100% and everything slows down. The quickest way round this is to re-start, when everything settles down again.

Why would this start happening now and how can I see what's stuffing things up? I'm using Vista Home Premium SP 2.

Thanks

1161826 2010-12-15 06:46:00 Everything slows down like what?? The net?? Loading programs? Programs that are running? If its an Intel CPU disable speedstep and C1E in the BIOS

Open task manager and see whats going to 100%

Sounds like some software change made recently.

But yeah, go to processes tab in task manager and find out what exactly is using the CPU that much

1161828 2010-12-15 09:02:00 Speedy - it's the response of everything - scrolling in progs that are open, opening new programs, scrolling up and down a window.

Agent- sorry to be so dumb but do you mean look at the CPU figures? I've shut one thing down that was showing about 25 but it's not made much difference and it's something that's been running in the background all the time anyway and not been updated. Something called soffice.bin is showing around 40. Is that something to do with Open Office?

1161829 2010-12-15 09:10:00 Tuiruru .... Have you done all the usual scans ... i.e. antivirus, spyware, malware, etc. ??

Only a suggestions but maybe a HJT log for "Speedy the Great" to have a look at might find something.

Yes SP8's I guess scanning's the next step - I'll have to do that tomorrow.

1161831 2010-12-15 09:26:00 Remember to disable system restore before you start and run CCleaner to get rid of all the old temp files first ... makes the scans quicker. SP8's (9836)

Yes soffice.bin is Open Office. Do you have the latest version? Does the computer run better if you end that process?

What was using 25%?

1161833 2010-12-16 02:34:00 All the scans (Avast Home, Malware Bytes, Spybot, Super Antispyware, Spyware Terminator) have checked out OK.

The little app I killed was Xneat Clipboard Manager which, again, I've been using for years without any probs and this seems to be behaving itself now. Soffice.bin has also settled down, so I'll have to see how it all goes.

Thanks for your input

1161834 2010-12-16 04:35:00 Download Hijack This > scan > copy & paste to forum .... Ask Speedy nicely if he can see anything hiding in there.
