1114929 2010-07-01 02:36:00 I'm quite a peaceful, laid-back kind of guy, :nerd: never lose my temper, yada yada yada - except today. Two years ago I gave SWMBO a birthday present of a Gym membership (listen, she wanted it, and probably could use it (*duck*)). Due to various health reasons she could not visit the Gym the last 10 months or so but we signed a contract and could not get out of it.

When we signed the contract initially, paying weekly installments, I pertinently asked the questions like "this is only a two year contract, so if SWMBO wants to extend it, she need to request it" (they said yes) and "do we need to give notice should we not extend ...". (they said no) In any case, I saw the Gym still fleecing me after about a month past the contract endtime. Called them, and lo and behold, the lady on the phone (no, the manager was not available) said no, nobody ever said that (we dealt with a young one and this bird on the phone was quite elderly). Whatever I said she said, no, it is/was not so. Eventually I thought I'm going to lose my temper and I quickly ended the conversation, after which I used quite a mouthful of nasty words (that I haven't used in years).

After I calmed down, I wrote a nice email to them, the frickin leeches, telling them what happened and what will happen now. I also told them I do not want to talk about it on the phone, as I want a paper trail for possible further action.

Incidently, the contract does not state that I need to give notice of any sort so I think I will persue this to the end - bitter or not.

What should be learnt from this? Be wary of Gym salespeople and what they say - and read your contracts carefully.:angry

1114930 2010-07-01 02:42:00 We just had a conversation ourselves at lunch time about gyms.
One of the guys here wants to join a gym and couldn't believe how rude and arrogant the staff at the gyms are, here in Whangarei.
One of the gyms even called him up and asked if he was going to join but when he said no they started abusing him, calling him fat etc then hung up on him!

1114932 2010-07-01 04:12:00 Can't PCTek - SWMBO's knees are b*ggered these days so I can't even chase her around the house anymore. Should trade her in for two 26 year old's. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. O no b*gger, twice the problems, rather not. Could be fun though.

1114934 2010-07-01 04:23:00 What about those exercise sessions they have at local pools,
less stress on the knees for sure.
(and don't back down with the gym, they don't deserve your money)

1114935 2010-07-01 05:59:00 I dealt with a few of these cases when I was with the CAB - usually, but not always, the salesperson gave incorrect information. I found that by me making a quiet call to the Gym owner (as as CAB Consumer person) gave a result where both parties were content.

Try them.

On reflection, the salespeople were on a commission basis and had nowt to do with the gym they were selling subs for. They thought this could give them licence to say anything they liked.

1114938 2010-07-01 09:04:00 I was considering joining a gym so I can build up my strength as well as my fitness. If they are all that bad I will just stick to running the flood banks. Greven (91)
