1114203 2010-08-31 05:56:00 I've been asked to inspect quite a few water tanks that are damaged and claimed for on insurance. Ultimately if the cause isn't external to the tank (ie there are no impact marks from someone or something striking it) then the claim isn't accepted until such time that the claimant can prove that it was a sudden and accidental event causing damage to the tank. The cause is often not identified.

Inherent defect / fault is not covered by insurers, and it's worth noting that the company does not produce these tanks anymore. I looked at a claim for the same sort of tank about a year ago, the top collapsed and it split down the side. The claim for the tank wasn't paid but the damage the water gushing out to a nearby building was, plus the cost of the water itself.

Ribtec tanks started popping all over Northland about 10 years ago - they were fibreglass and their time had come.

Devan Tanks (made in Tauranga) seem to do a product that has stood the test of time, they are rotationally moulded (no seam) and flexible. They deliver NZ Wide, from memory a 30,000litre tank is $3500 incl delivery.

I have however been able to prove the following reasons for a tank split... one may be of help..

* The base not prepared properly and a stone or uneveness causing stress on one part of the tank

* Water hammer effect causing stress around the pipe outlet

* Storm conditions causing a partially filled tank to warp and split

* Impact by tree limbs during storm

* Impact by kid on bike / ride on lawnmower/ falling washingline (yes lol)

* Low flying jet and associated alleged sonic boom ... we couldn't prove that a boom occurred but we did confirm jet activity in the area at the time.. this was a Ribtec tank so the owner was lucky in my opinion.

At the end of the day I think it is failure of the seam along the top of the tank and you could continue to put pressure on the supplier or the company that took on the manufacturing company's responsibilities. These tank manufacturers usually herald their 20 - 30 year guarantees.

IF they won't come to the party get them to identify the cause and commit it to writing, then trot off to your insurers.

Good luck!!!

1114204 2010-08-31 06:11:00 The insurers employed engineers to find cause.
They were unable to find cause apart from pump continuing to pump after tank empty, causing a vacuum, sucking in top.Problem with that was, there are 2 x 45 mm vents, which didn't show any signs of blockage.

Anyway the Insurers have come to the party.
