| 1162126 | 2010-12-19 23:15:00 | It's not the loss of subscribers, they're at an all-time high. Its the Cabinetization that has, and the fact that when ADSL was first rolled out in NZ, the technology hadn't even been available internationally for 12 months, so forecasting was damn near impossible. With the extra 8-9 years under their belt, and the new "groove" that's flowing from the top-down since the advent of their new CEO, they've invested in a backbone that's now able to provide adequately for all existing customers, as well as some exponential growth through FTTN. Still, at the end of the day, Slingshot mostly wholesale their connections off Chorus just as Telecom do, with the exception that Slingshot doesn't have enough bandwidth to cope with customer demand. Agent_24 is right on the money! The Cabinets are also being used by Slingshot (For the better part where available), but it's their backhaul that's causing all the issues. |

| 1162127 | 2010-12-22 08:52:00 | What we don't know: - How the wiring is in his new place - What speeds he's sync'ing at - What filters are on his line, and how reliable they are - What his modem make / model is - What speeds he's sync'ing at - How far from the Exchange / Cabinet he is - How many other users there are in his area on the same Exchange / Cabinet, which is especially important if: - The exchange is ADSL1, or has it been upgraded to ADSL2+ / VDSL - Where he's moved from and all of the connection details from his previous house But all those things you mention above are nothing to do with Slingshot - so why say they're at fault in THIS case? I admit they are bad in most other things - actually, in my mind I can never get over the fact that Annette Presley was the boss. Did you hear Bob Jones comments on her? www.youtube.com |

| 1162128 | 2010-12-22 09:45:00 | I would like to dump Slingshot as speeds have deteriorated. Surprise surprise: Speedtest shows I am getting 2.4 Mb/s down and 0.77 Mb/s upload. Not bad. Aljazeera News videos on our new internet capable LCD TV do not stall like they did a couple of weeks ago. These speeds were the same at 7 AM this morning as now. I used to get half of these speeds awhile ago. I don't know why Slingshot speeds are better now as I have not altered the wiring or phones in our house. I will run a test during the peak time of 5 - 8 pm and see what I get. BTW remember I am in the Wairarapa so it is unlikely internet speeds here can be as fast as in the big cities. I have yet to talk with neighbours (on the same exchange - yes I have a map and yes we are on ADSL2) but if I find they are getting significantly faster speeds then I will change ISPs. |

Coz instead of going through all that, it's easier to go on their recent track record over massively over subscribed bandwidth. Simple really! :pf1mobmini: |

Simple really! :pf1mobmini: Sounds good, BUT if the problem is his house wiring, he will have achieved nothing. Far better to eliminate the simple things first when diagnosing a problem and checking his line speed against his neighbours is the easiest. |

| 1162131 | 2010-12-23 08:43:00 | I agree. While Slingshot may be run by psychotic clowns, there is little point in wasting $149 on an early termination fee if it's not the ISP at fault. Though by all means if you can get them to waive the fee then changing ISP is probably a good idea. |

| 1162132 | 2010-12-23 09:02:00 | when i run speedtest.net we usually get between 4.5 and just over 5Mbs down and .75Mbs up. and these results happen at random times of the day when i test it. the ping is always over 200ms but hey. we were on the telecom 20GB plan for quite awhile, but they rung last week and offered to double our cap to 40GB a month for $2 a month more :D |

| 1162133 | 2010-12-28 07:24:00 | You can't win! First I was with Orcon, terrible latency, they couldn't fix it. Then Xtra, Broadband was Ok but phone line terrible. Then Vodafone, excellent Broadband & Phone for two years, then got slower and slower, finally the phone cut off for a week! Orcon to the rescue. Phone & Broadband excellent, download at 3.5 Mbps, upload .77 Mbps. This lasted for two months, then dropped to 1.7 Mbps download, upload has remained the same. Orcon say its the distance from the exchange! I realise that there have been earthquakes about, but I'm certain that our house hasn't moved, and I don't think the exchange has!! I am thinking of wireless, we are in line of sight of Sky Tower. |
