It actually sounds like the CPU may not be coming out of Power Saving mode
correctly: check the actual CPU speed when its running slow *control panel, system properties

Best option would be to shut it down properly (not use hybernate by closing the lid)
Check for driver updates from manufacture, & see if any bios updates are available (be very careful with bios updates. they can screw things up-rare but happens)

also task manager (ctl alt del) will show cpu use per process

1161846 2010-12-16 23:22:00 maaate, you have so much stuff loaded & running on that laptop its no surprise you having a few issues ( seriously) - I was tempted to say crap loaded :)

msconfig - start disabling startups
check scheduler & disable some scheduled items

True... The HJ log is 5x my log. I wonder if something is trying to connect/download to the net from one of those start ups?

1161847 2010-12-16 23:47:00 OK guys - guilty as charged - it does need a bit of a tidy up!! :crying
At the moment (whilst I'm on here) the "System Idle Process in Task Manager is bouncing around a bit but kind of averages out in the high 20's and my little "System Resource Manager app shows overall average CPU use kicking around 70

My little NetMeter app shows next to nothing either up or down at the moment.

Will try a few things including that What's Running thingy suggested by Chaser.

1161848 2010-12-17 02:39:00 What's running net once found a rogue screen saver (called aaa.sncr or similar) trying to connect on my pc. So I blocked with the firewall. But since you say your net meter shows low activity, that might mean some sort of service(s) may be running excessively. Either within the svchost.exe files, or possibly from one of the programs you have installed.

Might be able to check what services are running via msconfig - services tab - then check microsoft services and also hide Microsoft services to check other services. But then have to be careful, if you disable such services (if you don't know what they do) to try find the culprit by elimination. I once found adware service lurking in that section a year or so after I uninstalled it. Then had to disable it in the microsoft services section (under admin tools - services) - and again have to be careful so as not to disable essential services

Maybe visit svchost.exe (www.neuber.com), and try their analyzer, and read the comments.

1161849 2010-12-17 03:48:00 Have downloaded and run Svchost Analyzer and Security Task Manager and they haven't really thrown shown anything that concerns me at the moment (as if I'd know anyway!:waughh:)

Interestingly tho, when I start What's Running Net there's a bit of of a pause and then this error message (www.imagef1.net.nz) pops up. A while ago I installed Battery Bar Pro (on the recommendation of another thread) and when the trial period ran out it carried on running with apparently no problem in it's simple form until just now.

On a slightly different tack, at about what percentage of used drive space to you start running into trouble? I've got 53.6 GB left out of 288GB.

Also, the CPU usage does seem to creep up over a period of time - after a restart it ticks along nicely for a while....

1161851 2010-12-17 07:32:00 Just wondering whether it might be an idea to backup all the data you want to keep ... e.g Pics, Docs, Etc and then do a clean install. Get rid of all the crap on there and start afresh ... may save you a lot of stress and time in the long run.

:2cents: might save your sanity as well ..... :badpc::badpc::badpc: ..... :angry

1161852 2010-12-17 07:40:00 I suggest you to run CCleaner to remove unnecessary files and bad registry values. It will help to boot speed to your laptop. icyland01 (16129)
1161853 2010-12-17 09:49:00 You said soffice.bin was using a lot of CPU, that is OpenOffice as we know.

Since it runs with Java, have you tried removing all Java, and then installing the latest version?

Have you tried upgrading OpenOffice either?
