What does your modem say your line rate is and what sort of speeds do your neighbours get? I do plan to check with neighours before I change ISP's. Will check modem rate but earlier this year when I checked it was OK. Telecom's broadband service is actually very good - and since their pricing restructure, they are competitive (but not the leader) in value. However, they're still a prick of a company, so some will avoid them on principle. It is good to know Telecom has improved. If I can find a good ISP I will be one who avoids them on principle. At the moment I Orcon looks good. |

Yes, you're right about home wiring, but because the user is with Slingshot, it's easier to presume they're the fault and change ISP's than the other way around |

At the old house, we had very good internet speeds, at least compared to what they are now.." so the problem is NOT Slingshot. |

| 1162118 | 2010-12-19 09:55:00 | I would recommend Telecom: Speed has increased very nicely since the new ADSL2+ cabinets went in They just doubled my data to 40GB for free Free access to Yahoo!Xtra Pro Mail and a Flickr Pro account. Tech support isn't awesome, sometimes when you call you get a moron, but if you call back 10 minutes later you usually get someone who actually knows the difference between line sync rate and download speed. From a couple of horror stories I read about Slingshot's support, well... I wouldn't recommend them at all. Wait, What support? Although in your case, it may simply be that you have moved to a new house which is too far away from an exchange or cabinet to get anything better. I would suggest checking www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps to see if you are near any good equipment, and if so, consider switching to Telecom. Or your line might just be in really bad condition and needs some maintenance. |

| 1162120 | 2010-12-19 18:58:00 | Why? - in the original post, Jonathan said - "...have stayed on Slingshot. At the old house, we had very good internet speeds, at least compared to what they are now.." so the problem is NOT Slingshot. No, not specifically. What we do know: - Slingshot are notorious for their oversubscription - Slingshot have turned to crap since their flat-rate plan - That Jonathans speeds at his previous house were better with Slingshot than they are currently What we don't know: - How the wiring is in his new place - What speeds he's sync'ing at - What filters are on his line, and how reliable they are - What his modem make / model is - What speeds he's sync'ing at - How far from the Exchange / Cabinet he is - How many other users there are in his area on the same Exchange / Cabinet, which is especially important if: - The exchange is ADSL1, or has it been upgraded to ADSL2+ / VDSL - Where he's moved from and all of the connection details from his previous house With the way things have been going for Slingshot lately, it's far easier to presume they're the problem rather than everything else. More often that not, the common denominator between bad speeds is Slingshot, pretty much purely because they've oversubscribed their wholesale bandwidth allocation. |

| 1162124 | 2010-12-19 20:36:00 | You think that may be why we're getting good speeds now? I don't think that the lower user load is why, but I do think the loss of subscribers caused them to re-evaluate their approach and drastically improve the service they offer to their customers. The cabinet and exchange upgrades are the main technical reason for the service improvements I believe. |
