1162610 2010-12-16 10:14:00 I was playing around partly due to limitations to Window's utilities.

I didn't do any disk commands. I re-imaged my HD but forgtten so automatic Windows Updates was still on .. so it was applying like 60 of them. It did say .. some failure so "reverting changes".

I wanted to protect my current HD so I took a spare HD out (well the 2nd backup drive). I swapped them around and stuff. Then I put the original drive back and it wouldn't boot (!).

I booted the Windows Repair CD and it couldn't fix the boot.

I took it to the USB HD Dock on the laptop and my files were still there

A lot of working around, then I gave up trying to restore a older image and just used the image I created last night. Now just gotta source my MS Outlook file back, as I got some emails today.

1) Well Windows Updates can screw up the system eh ..

2) If it does not boot, does System Restore work? I mean the automatic ones Windows is suppose to generate prior to each Windows Update. Because the System Image might not always be that recent.

3) It reminded me the limitations of Window's Systems Image utility.

When you make images, it simply overwrites the previous one.

You can rename the old one and do a new one but when you boot up the utility it is not shown on the list. When you rename it, it doesn't get picked up by the software. The only way to have more than 1 image on the list and for you to choose one is if you have 2 HDs with an image on each or a HD and a DVD disc (and you didn't rename that folder).

It can also be picky with the size of the HD. Even if you have room (and you counted the systems partition as well) the software may not even start.

If you had a old HD with linux or you deleted the partition in Windows there might still be some traces Windows did not pick up, that can prevent Systems Image CD from booting up.

When I used Norton Ghose yonks ago, a reimage meant that you totally nuked it back to the past. With the Window's utility, there are still some configuration that is not replaced.

1162611 2010-12-16 10:31:00 Windows updates depending on the OS youre using can stuff booting up. After you reboot.

And if you dont wait for the updates to download / install probably it will probably stuff things up.

So you backed up while updates were downloading? Thats probably why it stuffed up, not all of the files were there to install / extract after. Theyre probably 1/2 there / corrupt in the backup

1162612 2010-12-16 10:43:00 Well could of been b/c I didn't know Update was on ... I normally do a Sync Back in the evenings but I don't backup the system drive, just my profile folders which is on a 2nd HD (copied to the system HD's 2nd partition).

Also, when it was downloading, I went into the settings and turn it off - to ask me before if I wanted to download them :p

Oh well .. no data lost.
