1116930 2010-07-07 09:29:00 Hi,

I was told that in 5 or so years the analogue TV signal is being entirely phased out in favour of the digital signal.

Will the digital signal still be broadcast as a terrestrial signal (UHF) at this time or is the digital signal via satellite dish only?

Thanks

1116931 2010-07-07 10:01:00 It'll be both (DVB-T and S). You can still use your TV, all you have to buy is the freeview box. You can use both now (either by buying the box for a TV, or for a computer (with a USB adapter, or a PCI card). And terrestrial is HD, satellite isn't Speedy Gonzales (78)
1116932 2010-07-07 10:24:00 so could i use a uhf freeview box on my standard definition tv and get a standard definition image? goodiesguy (15316)

1116935 2010-07-07 12:25:00 If your Sony has component connections (Y,Pb,Pr), connect those to your UHF Freeview set-top box, it'll be SD (HD output disabled in the Zinwell UHF boxes, dont know about others) but a much better picture than S-video (the next best) or composite (standard video=worst).
The above would apply to a satellite STB too (connection info only).

1116936 2010-07-07 12:38:00 cool. i don't have a uhf freeview box yet, but i will get one in the near future. my tv only has 2 av imputs, 1 at the back and 1 at the front, it dosent have the red one either so its mono audio.

i must see if our sky set top box has component output as our high definition lcd tv has component input and it would be better than composite. sky digital looks terrible.

Thats because sky is transmitted in oober low quality. Best to get an mysky box which upscales, or you can get an SCART to Component cable from Sky, go see them, our one was free but it still doesn't do a lot tbh.

From some Googling it looks like your 25" Trinitron TV is limited to composite input. Are you sure it's mono only? The sound jacks are sometimes black and white instead of red.

Are you watching TV on the LCD exclusively through a Sky standard definition box connected via composite? Does the TV not have Freeview|HD built in?

MySkyHDI costs $599 plus the high definition ticket is I think $3 per week. Unless you really want to see sport and movies in HD, or use its recorder, or are outside the Freeview|HD broadcast area, I don't think it's worth it.

There are different Sky boxes but typically there'll be a SCART connecter on the back of your box which can carry compoent video but you may need a converter.
