1116495 2010-07-07 06:34:00 John... thanks heaps for that input. Yep, I've read all of McCAll's books. He's not only an outstanding author, but has a real good grip on what it's like in that part of the world.

One advantage I have is that I spent many years working amongst the Zulu in South Africa, and have an empathy for both the lifestyle and the language - there seems to be many crossovers between the two tribal influences.

1116496 2010-07-07 06:41:00 You may like to check out the TV series "The Ladies Detective Agency" which is written by Alexander McCall (a Scottish writer/academic from Edinburgh, who lived and taught in Botswana for some years). The series is set in Botswana, and makes a big deal out of the culture and people there. It recently played on one of the Sky Channels, but you may be able to pick up a set somewhere. The books (of which there are many) will be in your local library.

Botswana has part of the Okavango Delta region, with amazing wildlife. We have two photos on our wall of the desert, taken by our daughter when she was there - stunning looking place.

Good luck to you - could be a life changing experience!

Alexander McCall Smith had very rose tinted glasses on when he wrote his novels. They are hardly relevant to real Botswana.

The Delta AFAIK is completely contained in Botswana.

That is obvious from the books and tv series, but the series gives you an idea of the environment.

I thought it was partly in Namibia, but evidently the term "Okavango" is restricted to Botswana:
"The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s largest inland water systems. It's headwaters start in Angola’s western highlands, with numerous tributaries joining to form the Cubango river, which then flows through Namibia (called the Kavango) and finally enters Botswana, where it is then called the Okavango." Yeah mate. But keep in mind they were exactly what you say - novels, ie fiction.

But I lived in South Africa, and (then) Rhodesia for a year, visited Namibia, and Zambia. So I can guess with fair accuracy his books are a good reflection on the life there, then.

1116499 2010-07-07 11:53:00 Funny that should come up,I was thinking of moving to outer Mongolia, equally intelligent place to go.

You have to remember he has a lot to offer, what with his knowledge of Zulu and that!

Might need to swat up on his Tswana though.

1116503 2010-07-07 22:45:00 Personally If I were single at this point in my life I'd be out of NZ in a shot, and wouldn't discount any area of the world if it held my interest.

Nothing wrong with a bit of risk, keeps things interesting.

1116504 2010-07-07 22:49:00 In the above case,I will surprised if it happens.

In my own case I set off to the Australian outback at 17,so am not averse to a bit of risk either.
