| 1116485 | 2010-07-07 00:32:00 | In 1980 I applied for the spot as GM of Air Botswana and made the short list to be interviewed by the High Commissioner in London. Air Botswana didn't have any aircraft but subserviced from a SA carrier, and my research went downhill from there. The main thing that stuck in my mind was that the only social or dare I say civilized (as we know it) activities centred around the ex-pat community and ready access to SA. That was 30 years ago, it must have improved since then. I never visited Gaborone (and never got the job), but the Top Gear episode was an eye opener, and made me realise that someone must have been looking after me. Good luck, anyway. |

The field = the actual playing field itself, the net fencing keeps the supporters off the field, and stops them throwing spears at each other. Reminds me of Gaborone .... :yuck: | WalOne (4202) | ||

Ya - but you'd do moronic things without thinking, in complete contrast to your namesake, yeah? At least I know a bit about the portion of Africa where Botswana lies. I can deal with heat, cold, scarce food and water. Don't absolutely need to know the expats.. it's away from Western "civilisation" I want to get away from - either temporarily, or permanantly |

Yeah mate - I hope to do a Bear Grylls type of trek for a few days to see if I can survive a part of the Kala. We'll see. Of course I'll have to find some sort of income first, so that if I survive I'll at least have some sort of home to come back to. All I'll need is water, some food and a toilet. Oh, and of course some shelter from the sun and cold. Not too much to ask. Poor White Guy goes Wild... could make a story. Or more likely I'll end up a dried husk which once was a piece of humanity. Thankfully I won't need a Doctorate to achieve that! LOL |

| 1116494 | 2010-07-07 06:08:00 | My younger daughter has been there, fell in love with the place, and wanted to go back and work there. She subsequently met a bloke and fell in love with him instead... However she says she would go back to Botswana in a heartbeat. I also worked with a bloke who went to work there on contract. He stayed for three or four years, and also fell in love with the place. He was tit useless when he came back because he couldn't keep his mind on the job over here - seemed to spend all his time in a dream state living back in Botswana in his mind. You may like to check out the TV series "The Ladies Detective Agency" which is written by Alexander McCall (a Scottish writer/academic from Edinburgh, who lived and taught in Botswana for some years). The series is set in Botswana, and makes a big deal out of the culture and people there. It recently played on one of the Sky Channels, but you may be able to pick up a set somewhere. The books (of which there are many) will be in your local library. Botswana has part of the Okavango Delta region, with amazing wildlife. We have two photos on our wall of the desert, taken by our daughter when she was there - stunning looking place. Good luck to you - could be a life changing experience! |
