1116475 2010-07-06 11:19:00 I'm thinking of going over there for an extended stay.

I lived in Southern Africa for many years, but never visited Botswana. I'm considering a permanent or at least a semi-permanent life-change.

Does anyone have any experience of living in that country?

1116479 2010-07-06 12:43:00 Currently checking out visa requirements, flights, costs - both of getting there and day to day living. And of course, Internet access in the towns.

It's about time I got out of the rut I've been living in recent years. I think I'm going there in my mum's memory. I know if she were alive today she would've ditched her lifestyle here in NZ and come with me in a flash.

1116480 2010-07-06 12:47:00 I've got a friend who's flying planes there at the moment.
He likes it, it's just harder to get stuff that we take for granted.
E.g. you can't go to a supermarket and buy from a list, you just buy what's available.
Also the water some days can be great and the next day there is no pressure.

1116482 2010-07-06 21:09:00 Yes and if you compare NZ vs Btoswana, esp with the economy it's surprisingly not as bad as you'd think.
Probably because:

Botswana:
Exports - commodities:
diamonds, copper, nickel, soda ash, meat, textiles

Imports - commodities:
foodstuffs, machinery, electrical goods, transport equipment, textiles, fuel and petroleum products, wood and paper products, metal and metal products

NZ:
Exports - commodities:
dairy products, meat, wood and wood products, fish, machinery

Imports - commodities:
machinery and equipment, vehicles and aircraft, petroleum, electronics, textiles, plastic

1116484 2010-07-06 22:59:00 Thanks for the input folks. Of major concern is... what's the price of coke and beer!? ;-)

I'm about to start making an inventory of all my stuff I can sell. Dunno if the girlfriend has a value?
