1164891 2010-12-26 08:48:00 Hi all,

I was given Windows 7 Home Premium for Xmas :) I can install in on 3 of our PCs here. They are all running Vista. However, one of my laptops CD/DVD drive doesn't work or sometimes randomly does appear (on going mystery) Is there some way I can copy the DVD disk to a book drive or 4Gb mem stick? Is this actually possible? Advice would be greatly appreciated as I want all our comps running the same version of Windows so I can then have a go at making a network :)

Thank you in advance for your help
Cheers, katy

1164892 2010-12-26 08:58:00 On a working PC ( optical Drive), download and install ISO recorder (isorecorder.alexfeinman.com) - select vista version -- Put the DVD in the drive, Right click the DVD drive, Create Image from CD/DVD, follow instructions through - The get a USB drive at least 4 GB - install the Microsoft USB tool (store.microsoft.com) - Create a bootable USB drive with W7 on it.

Go into the BIOS, and make sure the USB drive will be the first boot device, boot from it, and install W7 as per Normal.

1164893 2010-12-26 09:08:00 not per normal. Provided your usb stick is decent, much faster than normal. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
1164894 2010-12-26 09:11:00 I am confused :( why can't I copy the files on the Win7 DVD straight to a USB Drive? ollieogg (6593)
1164895 2010-12-26 09:32:00 I couldn't tell you why it won't work, but I can tell you it won't work.

Wainui knows his stuff, just follow his steps and you'll be dandy :)
and if not he'll happily help you when he gets round to it.

1164896 2010-12-26 09:35:00 Thanks Guys for the help and advice. I will do the two easy ones first then tackle the cantankerous laptop. ;) ollieogg (6593)
1164897 2010-12-26 09:37:00 You can copy the files no problem, but it wont work/Boot.

Another way, but a you need to do Via command prompts Explained here (www.intowindows.com) -- there is also another link at the end of that article, as well as pictures showing how to use the tool. OR if you want to use the DVD without making an ISO first, PM me and I'll send you a link to a Program that will do it.-- Wont post it here in a public forum.
