2010-12-25 19:36:00 | I was given new speakers for Xmas, however they appeared faulty so we decided to take them back to the shop today. Now I have reconnected the monitor sound cable back to the original configuration, ie the green rear socket, for playback through the monitor speakers. But nothing. The volume indicator lights are showing that something is happening but all is silent, and when I use the 'test' button in my Realtek HD Audio Manager still silent, I haven't changed any settings (that I am aware of) and have tried everything I know.... somewhere something is muting me. OS is Vista. | EFFIGY (12530) | |
2010-12-25 20:30:00 | Progress.... I connected the monitor sound to the front headphone jack and that is working perfectly, I then reconnected to the back and had sound for about 30 seconds but lost it as soon as I closed the sound manager programme. I wonder if the new 'faulty' speakers could have affected the rear jack? It was working fully up to that point..... this is annoying I don't really want to leave my speakers connected to my microphone jack. Is there a simple test to determine if the rear green socket has been damaged in any way? | EFFIGY (12530) | |
2010-12-25 20:39:00 | Go to Start > Control Panel > System > (look to top left) Device Manager > Sound, Video, GAme Conrollers .... are there any yellow warning signs ?? Open up Realtek HD Audio and check driver version ... you can either try to update driver or rollback driver ... if there's nothing wrong there, you could try uninstall and reinstall.

2010-12-25 20:42:00 | Try this- 1.In the task bar -Double click on the High Audio Speaker, usually orange in colour. 2.Select the Audio I/O tab 3.Click on the Blue circle with the white spanner 4.Tick Disable Front Panel Detection 5.Click OK. & Close Settings. Even though the option says disable it is in fact enabled. The speakers that were faulty, may have changed a setting someplace. I connected the monitor sound to the front microphone jack and that is working perfectly, huh !! Hopefully thats just a typo -- you connect the speakers to the line out, normally green, Not the microphone plug (normally Pink) Under the Audio I/O tab, there will be a speaker test - when plugged in you can select the Green plugs as lines out.

2010-12-25 20:43:00 | OPPS ... didn't see your last post as I was writing a reply ... Speakers shouldn't work in microphone jack ... do you mean headphone jack ??? Is it into a soundcard or onboard sound ?? If it's a sound card maybe it's been shifted slightly and not making good contact with the mobo .... try taking it out and putting it back in again. Open the case and see how much dust is in there ..

2010-12-25 20:45:00 | Yes sorry that was a typo, I have amended the post to read headphone - ie line out, sorry. | EFFIGY (12530) | |
2010-12-25 21:17:00 | Can you try this -- Make sure there are no ther audio devices plugged in - microphone, Speakers anywhere. Plug in the Speakers to the Rear Green port, it "should" pop up with a message saying the speakers were plugged in. If not, then IF there is still no joy after doing what SP8's suggested - run system restore back to before the problem started, could simply be a driver or system file turned turtle. Just a thought -- How may audio Plugs are on the Back - 3 or 6 ? I have an old clunker with Xp on it in the workshop, and I have to run the audio from one port that I normally wouldn't, the drivers are right, but if you have 6 ports, try each one and see if any work. Could be the settings, stereo - two speaker , 5.1 Surround etc

2010-12-25 21:55:00 | I cant find Audio I/O tab... The only orange speaker showing in the task bar is the Realtek HD Audio manager. That has no Audio I/O tab anywhere. There is also the system volume icon in the tray no tab on that either.... "Plug in the Speakers to the Rear Green port, it "should" pop up with a message saying the speakers were plugged in." I've tried twiddling with speaker types, it automatically detects that I have stereo speakers which is what I had before all of this....I have 6 sockets

2010-12-25 22:10:00 | Just did system restore and all is well, thanks guys. I've never had a problem with Logitec gear before, but the offending speakers were LS21.

2010-12-25 22:17:00 | Right click on Orange Speaker in task bar > Sound Manager > Connector Settings > Untick the box that says "mute rear panel output when headphones plugged in" .... could be that the headphone jack is "jammed" and still making contact which will mute the rear speaker output. | SP8's (9836) | |
