1164636 2010-12-24 22:06:00 Hi experts,

I have a Vodafone wireless router/modem that is wirelessly accessed by 2 laptops . I have a TV (Sony Bravia) that has a network port in it and I could get it connected to the router using a network cable and I could play movies from my laptop into the TV, etc . However, because the TV is on one side of the living room and the modem is on the other, I always have to get the long network cable across the living room, and I was thinking if I could get the network port on the TV to connect to some sort of a wireless access point it would be better, but my investigation led to my confusion .

Can anyone tell me if a cheap wireless modem/router connected to the TV could do the trick or if I have to buy specific equipment? Any suggestion of what to buy (obviously the cheaper the better) or how to work around it?

NB: The TV does not have the wireless capabilities inbuilt

Thanks for the help . .

1164638 2010-12-24 22:52:00 Errr, what's stopping you from placing the router beside the TV and running the phone cable to there instead? Paul.Cov (425)
1164639 2010-12-25 00:28:00 Hi Paul . Thanks for your reply .

Your idea would mean I will have to have the phone cable hanging from near the TV to the wall socket permanently . I should have probably mentioned that there is only one phone socket in the whole house . . I also can't bring the TV closer to the router because the phone socket is is close to the door . If I was to opt for proper wiring it will mean at least 40m of (ugly) cabling with all the work that it requires (not to mention I am renting the place so it will require owner's approval) .

Cheers .

Hi Speedy Gonzales,

The documentation of the TV only talks about wired network capabilities .

Basically, my issue here is about replacing that cable between the TV and the router with a wireless solution . .

1164641 2010-12-25 00:50:00 No way you're going to connect it to wireless then. It would need something to plug an adapter into it. I would if the carpet can lift up chuck the cable under it. Thats what I did here. I'm also in a flat, and it was a bit messy with the cable going around the sides / walls. There's 2 PC's here, connected with ethernet in opposite corners of the lounge Speedy Gonzales (78)
1164642 2010-12-25 02:15:00 Something like this? www.dlink.com leostr (16148)
1164643 2010-12-25 05:06:00 I bought a Bravia in June and a generic wireless dongle . The dongle didn't work . (Chilling Silence said it was being hopeful to think that a generic stick would) .

So I took the dongle back to Noel Leeming and they got me the official Sony part . About $100 . The Sony part works fine . It comes with a 1m cord and a 'paperweight' for slotting the dongle into . This is very useful . It not only allows good wireless positioning, but also easy removal of the dongle if you want to play media on a USB stick

1164645 2010-12-25 18:06:00 You could also go with something like the Accton 1-port router off trademe for around $60, then whack something like DD-WRT on it running in repeater-bridge mode?! I've mostly used the likes of the WRT54GL or WL520GU to accomplish that in the past but it works quote well and I know the cheaper Accton router (open-mesh) will do just what you want!
