1164651 2010-12-25 00:55:00 I’ve hunted High and Low for the correct Multimedia Audio Device Driver for an ASUS P4S800-MX Motherboard with WinXP SP2 OS.

Everest tells me that the Audio is SiS 7012 but the chip it’s on is a SiS 963L

Now everything looked very simple when I went to the ASUS site and entered all the appropriate details and was directed to a SiS 7012 driver.

Unfortunately, that driver crashed the whole system and I received the old “Your System has recovered from a serious error” “Do you want to tell Microsoft” (or words to that effect) message.

So, I downloaded a SiS 7012 driver from SiS but it stops the install with a -536870397 error message and then notification that the driver failed to install and setup was terminating.

So, the question is has anyone else experienced this problem and managed to rectify it?

Just to annoy me further, I have the disks for the later ASUS P4S800-MX-SE motherboard but they don’t work either.

Any suggestions appreciated. :thanks

1164652 2010-12-25 01:06:00 According to the ASUS site its soundmax not SIS audio. Type the mobo in here (support.asus.com) top left. Then select XP then Audio. Remember to uninstall what you've installed first. SIS is probably the chipset not the audio Speedy Gonzales (78)
1164653 2010-12-25 23:24:00 SiS 963L is your Southbridge, not your Audio Codec Chip.

Not sure where it's getting SiS 7012 from, possibly the name of an integrated Audio controller (different to the Codec)

Which as Speedy said, is a a SoundMAX and you should download the driver from Asus.

1164654 2010-12-27 02:37:00 Thanks Guy’s.

Starting at the top and following Speedy’s instructions I wound up at a destination which I’d found right at the beginning, although by a much longer route. :D

Anyway, the recommended folder was called WDM_3665.zip and when unzipped there was a folder called SMAXWDM. Inside that was two other folders called SE and 2000&XP. So I opened the latter and here were a selection of files with one called Install. Fine, I double clicked on that and precisely nothing happened. So I right clicked and chose Open and again nothing happened. I then dumped the original file and started again on the off chance the file may have become corrupted in the download, but alas, after going through the whole procedure again still nothing. The Install application simply won’t run. :groan:

I then tried updating the driver from the system folder and directing it to the 2000_XP folder but it couldn’t find a driver there.

Now given the file came from the ASUS website and all the input details regarding selection were correct, one could be forgiven for thinking it must be the correct Audio Driver.

However, Google comes up with all sorts of alternatives including this one (www.softwarepatch.com) which suggests that the SiS963l chip includes the Audio and requires a Sis 7012 Audio Driver.

Got me goosed I can tell you. In the meantime I plugged in an old soundcard and away we went. ;)

Beats me, the last time I had this much trouble I was trying to set up a soft modem on Linux. That was my first and last foray into Linux.

Is that file an EXE or something else?

It says it's an .exe.

I'll attach a couple of screenshots (I hope) :D
