1458525 2019-02-25 20:20:00 We hardly receive or make any calls via the landline any more. Most of our calls and texts are on the mobile - it's cheaper in the long run.

The main thing against is that we have a monitored house alarm on the line. What do we do about that? Can you just rent the line? Would that be cheaper?

Does anyone have just an alarm on their phone line? Or perhaps you know someone who has? I'd be interested to know.

Thanks for your help.

1458526 2019-02-25 20:30:00 Those monitored alarms actually dial out so they need a working phone line. You could talk to the monitoring company and see if they offer a solution.

You can get security systems these days that use your internet connection to send alerts via Email or an app on your smartphone with no need for anyone to be monitoring it if all you want is to be notified, the security companies should have something similar if they want to stay competetive.

I ditched my landline years ago and haven't missed it.

1458529 2019-02-27 04:36:00 Yes I ditched mine
I am an older guy, but I found that I hardly ever used it.
And I saved the $5.00 a month, and put it towards a faster ufb.
But I can't comment re alarm systems.

If they build a new sub-division do they put copper wire in?

1458532 2019-02-27 05:09:00 They just put fibre into the one down the road yet fibre isn't available to the town for at least the next 2 years, and never where we are 5km further down the same road gary67 (56)

Why would they? If you want a landline now, you have one over fibre.

1458534 2019-02-27 19:52:00 We are moving away from copper, it's expensive to install and maintain and can't offer the services fibre can.
So when new subdivisions are built they get fibre but no copper.

Another side of it is even when copper exists spark are reluctant to use it and will push for a fibre or cellular option.
I know someone who was trying to get a phone connected for his mother and there was a phone on the property with disconnect tone which means it was physically ready to go and only needed to be activated.
Spark wouldn't do it, they don't want new customers on copper when there is an alternative.
