1458432 2019-02-21 21:57:00 NZ, and now Aus are being made to pay for their stand on rejecting Huawai for 5G . Ch is hitting us both where it hurts , our exports to Ch
UK & now Germany have both OK'ed Huawai hardware for the 5G network . NZ takes the opposite stance .

Who really cares if 5G has spyware in it. So will many of the future Android devices using it .
Isnt it just stupidity to ever assume 3G 4G 5G is ever a secure medium ? So why would it matter . We still buy a high % of Chinese made phones , double standards ?

Is it time we need to stop seeing China as the Enemy ?
US put tarrifs on our exports into US (alu a recent example), China did not (free trade).
The Free trade agreement we tried to negotiate with the US had some particularly nasty clauses, the Free Trade pact with Ch was benign in comparison.
So who really are our friends .

Assume we dont allow Huawai to setup our 5G.
So do we go with US hardware, that will 100% have backdoors to allow US to spy on us.

This is going to hurt NZ long term .

Yes, but - China is run by a not very nice government. Regardless of what you might think of any U.S. President, (s)he is never going to be around for more than 8 years and there is a proper political opposition.

When the Great Firewall of China collapses and all the inmates of indoctrination camps are freed and the bullying of smaller S.E. Asian countries stops - then maybe.

1458435 2019-02-22 00:13:00 I suspect its more to do with the trade war between US & China

US have now come out & said they wont be sharing security info with any country using Huawai 5G systems .
They have up'ed the ante .

Chinese phones & laptops are somehow OK. Everything is made in CH (except Samsung)
And OS's , IOT's and Apps spying : we can look the other way on those :-)

China is the enemy . Why would a friendly country put pressure on trade simply because they don't like the way another country talks about it? Or that one of their businesses doesn't get the deal they wanted? China is a bully and is using its economic might to sway other countries .

1458438 2019-02-22 01:12:00 They have connections in high places. :D

"It's important for the United States to consider that China may be testing methods of interference to probe for weaknesses in democracies in order to use the same techniques against Western countries in the future."

Former CIA analyst Peter Mattis told the hearing one of the "major fundraisers for Jacinda Ardern's party" has links to United Front, an agency for the Central Committee of the CCP.

"You have to say this is close enough to the central political core of the New Zealand system that we have to think about whether or not they take action and what kinds of action."

1458441 2019-02-22 01:39:00 The commercial equipment is not as much junk as their consumer products, but there is evidence that the designs may not be all Huaweis own work. Chinese manufacturers have a reputation for copying other peoples work without paying for it. How prevalent that is I don't know.

This is anecdotal but I heard from one of the team who helped with some of the first Huawei equipment to be installed in the chorus network (there's quite a bit, mainly DWDM systems) that the engineers didn't want anyone to have access to the management software until they finished developing it. Apparently those who did see it noticed it appeared to be software belonging to a rival company or at least had that companys logos on it. No trace of that now though so if it was true the evidence is gone.

Yes I'm being deliberately a bit vague to cover my own Butt.
