| 1456364 | 2018-12-10 22:15:00 | Bought a used notebook (to replace my dead old laptop) came with Win10 Home installed. Now, I have got 2 copies of Windows 8 Professional Keys which I bought them years ago during the promotion period when Win8 was first released just $20. I used only one of them and the other one has never been used. I used Windows 10 Media Creation Tool to download the latest ver 1809 onto USB, it all went smoothly and fast. :) I just wanted to try my luck, see whether I could still use Win8 key to install Win10 Pro. I booted from the USB drive which I just downloaded, booted up and went through the installation process, all OK and fast. But during the installation, it never prompted me to select which version of Win10 (Home or Professional) to install, When all completed, I checked and found that it installed Win10 Home automatically, Why? |

When windows installs it registers the hardware with MS servers, so when reinstalling it looks to see if its been registered and if so puts back the same version as before. It may also have a licence key embedded in the motherboard (w7 or W8) so it can also pick up that and use it. You can usually just change to Pro easily enough. Several methods but all end up in the same place :) Click Search, type in Activation OR Change product Key Open Activation, click on Change Product Key, as long as it accepts it, it will offer to upgrade to pro, will need to download files etc, but on restarting you now have pro. 9239 |
