| 1455940 | 2018-11-25 18:35:00 | I'm in the process of taking another friend's 'puter off the M$ nipple, and installing a Linux-type distro for him & her . It had Win 98SE in it - yeah - no snide remarks . . . OK? It was also D E A D as far as using in on the internet and was basically an interesting . . . albeit ugly . . . . doorstop . Theirs is an old {1999} "E-Machine" with just a smattering of RAM - as yet undetected by me, and no actual outside peripheral devices other than a very slow internet connection at what might be slightly faster than an old sailor holding semaphore flags standing on their rooftop . I have all sorts of L-based distros . . . . Antergos 17 . 11 x86, Centos 03 7x86 64 1804 (? I have NO IDEA what all those numbers mean), Gentoo, Kubuntu 16 . 4 LTS, Lubuntu x . xx . x Linux Cinnamon x . xx . x, Linux Lite 4 . 2, Linux Mint, Mepis (?), Puppy PC Linux 64-Mate, Ubuntu 16 . 02 . 0, 14 . 04 . 5, Ubuntu Budgie 18 . 10, Ubuntu Studio x . xx . xx, XBuntu x . xx . x Zorin xx . xx . x, . . . . . and . . . . of course: GPARTED . . . . which I used to purge the hdd of all the offending junk from M$ . Oh . . . I also have a licensed, full installation disk for 98SE and even 3 . 1 . . . and 2000 and both XP-Home & XP-Pro with SP3, and even WinME . I can put any of them back and just deny them WiFi access . . . . to keep Blue Stars from happening . Of all those (^) L-based distros - which one would you think this goofy 'puter will accept without a Kernal Panic? I can't believe what I'm about to post here: ------------> Kubuntu 16 . 4 LTS . . . . It's all-in and up-n-running and happy; It even saw the WiFi printer too! It will NOT accept any of the other distros at all! They all just get Kernal Panics and/or just a whirring sound as the optical drive just keeps on spinning! Go figger! |

Old in itself means nothing, friend of mine has all sorts, from XTs, ATs and older, running all sorts of ancient things Xenix and such all the way to modern things running Mint . None have issues . Old as they are . One did once, but I found a motherboard for it (miracle that was) and it was given new life . Why does he have this collection he was asked once? The reply was Because I can . |

| 1455942 | 2018-11-25 23:53:00 | Well I am a Mint fan . But you have already chosen . With that post, I'd say it has some issue, H/w related . I too prefer Mint for my everyday 'puter . I save my other one for my audio recording studio . . . . but MY surprise was that it chose to ONLY accept Kubuntu, and not something lighter - even Puppy! I TRIED to get Mint to go . . . . no deal! How can a hardware problem of disassociation by Linux-thingies --- be so selective? I'da thunk that Budgie or Puppy would be good to go --- but No-o-o! |

| 1455943 | 2018-11-26 01:56:00 | How can a hardware problem of disassociation by Linux-thingies --- be so selective? Well, yes. Why would it be any different to any other O/S, they encounter a hardware issue of some sort and stop. perhaps it;s a driver issue, I can't say...ask on a Linux forum and see what they suggest. |

| 1455944 | 2018-11-26 02:13:00 | Just :2cents: You can try / Make sure you are NOT using a X64 bit OS. Had a couple of older PC's here, that had linux installed (ones still going) you HAD to install a x86, the hardware simply was to old to run X64bit. |

Sorry to be so late..... but yeah.... it's 64-bit. |

| 1455947 | 2019-01-14 20:07:00 | The other 'puter is somewhat heavier duty than my Mint/Ubuntu/Kubuntu 'puter with lots more RAM and triple 500g hdds . It's just really persnickety about what distro it will accept . I've tried boodles of distros and very few will get past the splash screen or just light up the hdd and optical drive "Busy Lights" and freeze . Somewhere I lost Pyppy, but I think I can use it as the mineshaft canary here to see if ANYTHING will load up besides CentOS . I don't like CentOS and I'm sure it dislikes me . For some reason I could not cease being reported to someone hiding behind the curtain at CentOS-Central . . . . . waiting to slap the handcuffs on me and throw me into a dungeon in Ho Chi Min City . A word of warning to everyone in Upsidedown Land: don't ever use the word "sudo" in CentOS . I also notice that my spellclunker isn't working . Or maybe it is . . . . . . and it un-corrects my spelling . . . and In the latter case . . . . therefor it IS working . |

| 1455948 | 2019-01-14 20:46:00 | A word of warning to everyone in Upsidedown Land: don't ever use the word "sudo" in CentOS. Tisk tisk :nerd: -- Remember me saying CentOS is NOT MINT ;) Dont go treating as such, CentOS is a different kettle of fish. The reason you are getting the message "This incident will be reported" is because the user name is not in the sudo file. What you have to do is in the Terminal, type in su - Enter your password, you'll then get a hash tag # Then after that use the yum command to do what ever you want. See picture below. 9295 The example above was checking for updates, theres a few in this install, so the command to do them all after the # yum update (note the # will already be there after you did the su - ) 9294 What i'm finding quite amusing :D is a Mainly Windows based user having to give advise on Linux, wheres all the people who push it so much ;) |

| 1455949 | 2019-01-14 21:29:00 | I like the KDE version of MINT on older hardware, still looks and feels like MINT but is a bit lighter on resources. Linux is still just an occasional experiment for me though, every couple of years I try to make the switch on at least one machine, and every time I give up and go back to windows. One of these days everything I want will work properly and I'll consider sticking with it. Cheap grey market windows keys have killed my Linux enthusiasm somewhat though. |
