1456684 2018-12-20 07:41:00 That would work if only Vista would run.

The chap seems to like the idea of OS upgrade even suggesting Windows 8.

He's going to wait for Boxing day sales at PBTech.

Yeah that was me being sarcastic about suggestions that require a working OS to use, in case it wasn't obvious.

1456685 2018-12-20 09:05:00 If you want to get the data saved, if you dont have a bootable CD like linux to copy of to a USB drive, there is a couple of options.

Found this out the other day by mistake :nerd: Works on W10 but not to sure about Vista.

Make sure you have a USB drive connected, Boot from the Vista CD/DVD you have, when repair options, select Command Prompt. Type in Notepad <Press Enter> (serious)

From File - Open, navigate to your Drive, Locate your data, (could be in the Users Folder, cant remember if Vista had that or not) locate data, right click - Send to (USB Drive) Its helpful if the drive has some sort of indication of activity, as sometimes it will appear to lock up, but isn't.

The other option ( for another day and a bit) download sharewareonsale.com Its free for another day. Download it, run , create a bootable CD, boot from that CD, copy the data, its also will tell you what the Version of Vista Is, as well as a load of repair options. ( but dont hold your breath on them working)

Wainui, I love your solutions, just brilliant, thanks!

I downloaded Windows Boot Genius, made a disk. It booted no problem and I started poking around. The software itself prompted me to recover the product key (clever),.
OK, so I can confirm the version as Windows Vista (TM) Ultimate and product key matches that from the sticker.

1456687 2018-12-22 23:22:00 The chap bought a hydrid HDD and I installed Windows 8.1. System reports edition as 8.1 Pro.
Question: can I buy a product key from Ebay and expect it to work? There's a key for $7.26 (emailed). I suppose there' s things to consider like region, etc. I imagine these are genuine else Ebay wouldn't allow?
Thanks for any pointers.

1456688 2018-12-23 01:53:00 I've bought a few windows 10 keys off eBay, my main advice is use them immediately and don't wait.
Not sure how they get the keys exactly but not all of the ones I bought have worked and any that I kept for later definitely didn't.

The legality is a bit dodgy, they are legit keys intended for other markets and not meant to be resold.

1456689 2018-12-23 01:54:00 Why 8.1 though,very few people prefer it over 10? dugimodo (138)
1456690 2018-12-23 02:36:00 Thanks, good to know.

We debated the OS and there was pros and cons no matter which way. The existing Vista has already gone, no support. Windows 7 has limited time to go for extended support and he wasn't keen. He already runs Windows 8 on a lappy so has a bit of familiarity.
Asus doesn't even list Windows 10 amongst the choices of driver available. I liked Windows 7 as my choice but it wasn't my PC.

Anyway I wasn't thorough enough in my search for drivers and now it appears that only Vista (or older OS) has dedicated drivers for the P5K board. Oh well, it will work but needs generic drivers same as my old dinosaur PC does. The joys of old I suppose...

1456691 2018-12-25 11:05:00 Update,
The purchase of product key code went well. It was emailed within the promised timeframe. By the time Paypal tacked a bit on, my Visa statement showed $7.56
I entered the digits and boom, it worked!

1456692 2018-12-25 21:36:00 If it ever stops working then says invalid, you'll know why, its been blacklisted. Many of those types sell the same key over and over, then sometimes after about 3 months or so it deactivates.

Went to a few peoples places where this has happened, looked at the key they had "purchased cheap" :( sometimes when doing google searches for the key and sure enough there it is, listed multiple times.

If you had installed windows 10 you wouldn't have a problem, since W10 first looks at the motherboard, once activated the first time it stays activated, the key is not required.

1456693 2018-12-26 03:28:00 Good to know Wainui. A new key every 3 months might get a bit tiresome..hahaa! At some stage it must fall outside of Ebay Buyer Guarantee as well.
Hindsight being the wonderful thing it is, if I was to do this again I'd recommend W10 right from the get go. Also a key is less than 4 bucks NZD...even with Paypals' cut.
