| 1458742 | 2019-03-05 07:05:00 | Any garden appliance technicians out there. Got a problem with a garden shredder, Ryobi ESR2400A. SWMBO was using it the other day when it malfunctioned. It was refusing to re-start. Soft start was working but it wouldn’t spin up. She had already opened it up to see if it was clogged. I tried to turn the cutter but it was very stiff. I figured it was probably knackered & could already see the dollar signs. Thought I may as well pull it apart just make sure. Bit of a mission getting the motor out & it indeed was almost solid. Shot some CRC in each end & it freed up nicely. Pretty simple motor really, no brushes to worry about. A crisis averted maybe. So I put it all back together & hit the go button. Clunk, still the same. If you give the cutter a flick before hitting the button it spins up & runs nicely. So I’m assuming something in the soft start is not doing its job. It has quite a large sealed switch unit with a cut-out reset & also a large cylindrical shaped device, I took to be a capacitor. It’s a bit dangerous expecting SWMBO to use it like that, so it’s either throw it out & buy a new one or fix it. Any ideas?? |

Maybe the big capacitor is to give it some extra power at the initial start to get the motor spinning... Maybe when it was jambed it burnt out a few of the windings, so there mignt be good spots and bad spots, with the bad spots being unable to provide any thrust to get things turning. On the other hand, I'm confused by the 'soft start' comment. Are you suggesting the motor spins, but there's a clutch that isn't engaging? Final thought - try a shot of CRC into that big switch. It might just be dirty contacts in there. |

| 1458745 | 2019-03-05 07:52:00 | Firstly - that there are no brushes indicates to me that you have a motor that has no real windings - just a bunch of laminations that are axially twisted to give an attraction-repulsion factor to spin the motor . The capacitor, is indeed to assist starting and it might be mucked up . But be careful with it since youse guys run killer 240 volt AC and you can get a pretty good zap from a charged cap if it is so inclined . Before you used the CRC - did you smell any bad-electrical-type smells? Any smoke? Smoke is always a bad sign if it leaks out . After the CRC treatment - now it's anyone's guess to sniff if there's something scorched . Don't be thinking 'zebras' when you hear hoof beats . Keep the diagnosis simple and look for the obvious first . Switches fail all the time as do wire connections, although the actual wires seldom fail . Gonna take a wild guess here that the 'Schredder" joke flopped - huh? <sniff> |

| 1458747 | 2019-03-05 19:18:00 | Hmm, product user reviews for this are not good. However googling also shows some hot to fix sites, with some fairly easy checks and fixes, depending on what it might be. I love my mower chipper......had that mower for 15 years now, still going strong. |

| 1458748 | 2019-03-05 20:29:00 | I remember when we decided to buy one of these things, I checked product reviews for all the commonly available models. Not one of them got a good review unless you payed big dollars for a commercial type. Anyway, from the comments so far & the research I've done, it sounds like the armature may have suffered damage. So I'll give SWMBO a hand to get it going to clean-up the cuttings from this years crop & we will look at getting a new one for next year. I did suggest to her it would be cheaper to take the cuttings to green waste & buy the mulch. |

I have a masport petrol schredder , $15+ years old & its still going strong. It does make one hell of a racket though (its insanely loud) Mine is the older version of this www.bunnings.co.nz |
