1458133 2019-02-09 23:40:00 Just going through my first ever exercise of importing an item that will be subject to import duty.
It's only a radio coming from Sydney, so there shouldn't be any problems.
I'm curious as to the procedure & just how long it will take.
It was dispatched last wed & tracking tells me it has arrived at customs.

It would have to be a pretty good radio to get duty applied. All goods go through customs of course, even free duty ones

The estimator, yes been there.
Also rang customs & discussed it with them.
On this item there is no duty, just an entry fee, which I assume is calculated as a percentage of the purchase price.

1458136 2019-02-10 10:49:00 You might be pleasantly surprised. I've purchased goods online from AU and pay nothing but postage and actual price converted. as in free on the estimator Ofthesea (14129)
1458137 2019-02-10 20:44:00 Why was there no duty? I once bought a expensive Seiko watch online. When it arrived it was in a oversize box, which the seller had labelled, unknown to me beforehand, as a "Corded Calculator". But recently I tried to buy a radio via eBay, but seller could not ship, something about customs issues, and suggested I buy from elsewhere abroad. kahawai chaser (3545)

you'd be very unlucky to get any sort of charge :-)
In theory, anything coming in is subject to gst and collection fees.
However , its not worth time & labour cost for Customs/IRD if the gst is below $60 , thats where the $400 value comes in.

Sometimes even if its over $400 in value it will sneek through with no duties, gst or fees . They cant check every item , they dont have the staff to do it .
What Customs/IRD are doing now , is trying to get overseas sellers to add the gst & collect it for them. I cant image many overseas sellers wanting all the extra hassle to do that .
A few ebay sellers are adding duty/customs charges , and Amazon(?) .

1458139 2019-02-11 01:19:00 You guys might be right.
I just rang NZ Post & was told it had been cleared but not dispatched yet.
There were no fees to pay.
I find that hard to believe as no GST has been paid on it yet.
The AU retailer sold it to me ex AU GST because it would be added at NZ customs.
I'll believe it when I see it.

1458140 2019-02-11 08:38:00 Generally as a customer you won't know the amount to pay until you get contacted. If you use a carrier like DHL or Fedex Express they would do the paper work on behalf of customs and collect payment and forward this to NZ Customs. They do this for you soon after the parcel has been dispatched but before it gets to Auckland. If OTOH you used a cheaper / local shipping carrier you won't know until it has reached Auckland and it has been put aside and NZ Customs contacts you by phone / mail and needs payment prior to releasing it.
