1165763 2010-12-30 17:32:00 This morning I got the message that a HD failure is imminent :crying and I wonder if that has been the problem with this piece of cr*p all the time. Making clicking noises as well.

My question : how do I transfer my OEM XP from this HD to a new one, or is it better to perhaps get another cheapie tower?

1165764 2010-12-30 18:19:00 How? You could image the install across before it dies.
Or just do a fresh install on the new drive. No worries using the same key.

1165765 2010-12-30 18:20:00 Make a drive image - if possible - and transfer it to a new HD.

What brand is your hd? How old?

1165766 2010-12-30 21:07:00 Get a new HDD, attach it tothe PC and simply clone one to the other, that way it will keep everything the way it currently is, programs, files etc.

Suggestion; Use Paragon Drive copy. I have uploaded the ISO image for the bootable CD (got the program free from giveaway or a mag, cant remember now).

Download From Here (www.4shared.com) - click on the blue download button on the left - wait about 90 seconds for the download link to appear ( ignore the request to install the tool bar) - burn the ISO image using your ISO software to a CD - with the new, blank drive attached, boot from the CD.

Select Normal mode - Paragon Drive copy( default) -- once open, along the top, select WIZARDS - Copy Hard Drive - Make sure your current drive is drive 0 ( VERY important or you will wipe the drive, your drive will be in blue and you will see a bar showing how much of it is used) - next- select the blank drive - agree to anything -- click finished when it appears, bottom left - Apply Changes - you will see the drive cloning across.

Once finished,turn off PC.

Disconnect the old drive, and boot into the new one, every thing will be there as before, but on a new shiny drive.

1165767 2011-01-01 20:45:00 Thanks guys and Wainui. Rather sh*tty clicking noise, I must say. Couldn't even do malwarechecks - drive throwing a tantrum. So I will not use the PC until said replacement, and do what Wainuitech says.

Now where are there any specials on at the moment?

1165768 2011-01-06 21:01:00 Stupid question : should the new HD be the same size as the old one for cloning, and how the #$%^& do I know what size my HD is (2.5 inch, 3.5 inch) etc. Some very cheap 250 MB HD's on Pricespy (I only use the internal as a primary boot drive, my external takes all other cr*p)

1165769 2011-01-06 21:28:00 Size doesn't matter (in this case) :p

As long as there is enough space on the new drive to take the data, it will work. Generally you'd get a larger drive, the cost difference between a 250 and for example a 500gb is sfa these days.

Just this morning I cloned a 250GB drive to an 80GB drive, just for backup purposes, but because there was only around 60GB used on the 250GB drive it cloned fine.

Desktop HDD = 3.5"

Notebook HDD = 2.5"

Get a Seagate or Western Digital drive.

Do you know if the failing drive is SATA (i2.squidoocdn.com gate_Sata.jpg) or IDE (shop.wyeecomputers.com.au)?

1165770 2011-01-06 22:04:00 You will want a 3.5" drive.

2.5" are for laptops, and while you can get a mounting kit and adapter, the performance won't be as good, and they will cost more.

1165771 2011-01-07 01:27:00 Wratt, got no idea but will have a look tonight. Think it's SATA, but will check.

Yeah I saw there's no real difference in prices. So I will probably look for the best/fastest rpm speed, although I don't know whether my old piece of AMD cr*p will be able to use it.

Is it not better/cheaper just to get a basic new CPU - I've got a new PSU, new DVD-burner, new screen? Got no idea myself, just askin'?

1165772 2011-01-07 04:10:00 That would mean a new motherboard and RAM though. even the fastest drive will work on an old system so long as it has the correct connection so won't make any difference the computer being a bit older gary67 (56)
