1165385 2010-12-29 06:37:00 But when I move it horizontally across the screen, the pointer is moving at the right speed.

I tried picking it up and running my thumb across the laser light and the pointer moves at the right speed, both horizontally and vertically.

No recent changes to the mouse pointer settings.

It's a Logitech M905 mouse (DarkField)

Cheers :)

1165386 2010-12-29 06:46:00 Not cordless? Mine does that when the battery starts to get low. Desk on a lean? try putting a spirit level on it gary67 (56)
1165387 2010-12-29 07:01:00 Shiny/mirrored or patterned surface you're using it on?
Lenticular (en.wikipedia.org) printed 3d mouse mat?
Dirt/hair in the laser/pickup recess?

1165388 2010-12-29 07:08:00 Cordless mouse. When I took out and reinserted the batteries, the pointer moved vertically normally for about three seconds. Subsequent to that, it slow to a crawl. However, when I lifted it up and tried to run it across my pants, the pointer moves normally again.

The table surface is flat, as far as I can tell.

1165389 2010-12-29 07:12:00 OH!

Now I figured out why: My mouse transmitter is currently plugged into a USB hub. When I plug it in to a regular USB port, the pointer scrolls vertically and horizontally normally again.
