1120321 2010-07-19 08:05:00 So much nicer than that God-awful A380.

Mind you...still to get to Auckland to see one in the flesh...

The point here is economics, not beauty,we will see how it goes.

1120324 2010-07-19 10:37:00 What's wrong with an A380 flew with Emirates from London/Dubai/Auckland (4 days in Dubai) Great leg room, entertainment and service, and sooooo quiet. Econ. class as well. Arnie (6624)

I'd have to have a far better reason to go to Auckland.

Not much chance of that with Boeing.
Forty five years ago when a designer with Boeing I was impressed with their obsession with safety. There was never any compromise. But I don't think the 787 is all that beautiful as the large bypass engines spoil the looks - but they do improve performance a heck of a lot.
Some of us remember the sleek small turbo prop and early jet engines - they were beautiful.
At one time Petter who designed the Canberra believed that the engines would actually fit "into" the wings'
But the best looking aircraft I ever worked on (at Boeing ) was a NASA entry into the supersonic passenger category. I was the propulsion engineer to look over it. A magnificent design that made even the Concorde look clumsy - it also had tremendous lift over drag and would have been an outstanding device. Pity that because of its streamlined and beautiful design we could never find any way of getting the passengers in and out of the thing.
