1165843 2011-01-20 06:50:00 Yes, the Bios splash screen starts up, the HD spins up (as it is supposed to do after an install) and then nothing.

Removing the HD gave a message about no device - too quick to see the whole comment.

Live CD did not run at all - same no signal fault

Monitor can only be connected to the VGA thing - there's nothing else to connect to. Remember, Win 7 ran first try.

1165844 2011-01-20 08:02:00 I just installed ubuntu 10.10 - The following is complete fly by the pants :D - total experiment.

Some Ubuntu expert will no doubt rip the following suggestion apart, I'm not that good with Ubuntu trouble shooting.
BUT as I have found out in the past, finding actual answers for Ubuntu questions can be like pulling teeth or lotto, painful and impossible.

This from what I can see is the Ubuntu safe mode, similar to windows, only loads the basic drivers.

ANYWAY Start the PC, at the same time Hold Down the SHIFT key, the BIOS will flash past - keep the shift key down, you should see "Grub Loading" - if it does, once the options come up, release the shift key.
using the arrow keys, Select the second option in brackets ( Recovery Mode)

Press enter

you will see a load of writing flying by.

Then a window pops up, using the arrow keys - select FailsafeX " run in Failsafe Graphic mode.

Press Enter

Click OK

Use the default - run in low graphics ---------

Agree to anything, by clicking of pressing enter and Ubuntu should run - IF it does, there is an option during the boot to use low graphics always, but dont select that yet. Just see if it can get it going.

I have tried to quickly find where to change the resolution's, but for the moment it evades me.

Aint Ubuntu fun

1165846 2011-01-21 00:38:00 WT, I tried your suggestion.

Saw the Grub loading fleetingly and then I got 4 options : Generic Ubuntu xxxxxxx, Generic Ubuntu xxxxxx (Recovery mode), Memtest86, Memtest86 with something else. Memtest passed. None of the Ubuntu choices worked, got the signal error on both. Seems to me I've got the wrong version of Ubuntu - which one did you install?

At a suggestion of a guy at work I checked the boot sequence, and found : the 2 DVD-drives are on channels 3 and 4, and the HD is on channel 6. This may be the cause of all the cr*p?

I think I should empty the HD again with that Paragon program you gave me, reload another version (the one you used), fix the boot sequence and then everything should go? How to fix the boot channels I don't know BUT I wonder if that was the problem - on boot-up the two drives flicker (showing them being checked) and then the HD spins up but the no signal error comes thru.

1165847 2011-01-21 00:41:00 Swap the SATA cables around. Some SATA ports are for hdd's / some are for DVD's / CD's. Read the mobo manual. See if this is the case Speedy Gonzales (78)
1165848 2011-01-21 00:56:00 Just adding to what Speedy put, check the manual, some SATA ports, are designed to run in a RAID format. Example: if you have 6 ports, 1-4 may be normal, 5&6 are better for RAID. Normally I put the Optical Drive or HDD on 1 & 2. ( some boards have 0,1,2,3 --- )

The recovery mode from what I can see is the real basic graphics, after selecting that, you should have seen a bunch of writing flying past.

The Ubuntu I downloaded was From Here (www.ubuntu.com) - the 32bit. Simply because the CPU I have is not 64Bit capable.

1165849 2011-01-21 01:06:00 Does this board have one of those JMicron SATA controllers?

I think I read in a motherboard manual that you shouldn't install the OS on a port connected to that controller, and you should only use it for storage etc.

Perhaps that is what is the problem, as Wainuitech and Speedy have said.

Try the HDD on the first port (0 or 1)

1165850 2011-01-21 01:41:00 The SATA ports have different colours - yellow, red, blue and something else. How do you know which one is the first port.

1165851 2011-01-21 01:42:00 Read the mobo manual. Or download the manual. Like for this mobo the manual says: When using the connectors in standard IDE mode (I take it these are for SATA DVD's)? connect to ports 1/2. I dont have any SATA DVD's. Only SATA hdd. Which is connected to port 3, and external E-sata on port 5 Speedy Gonzales (78)
1165852 2011-01-21 01:53:00 Yes, check the manual or look at the board itself. Often the numbering will be silkscreened on the board in white lettering, although this can be hard to read. Agent_24 (57)
