1165813 2011-01-15 21:03:00 XP OEM that sits on the old drive.

1165814 2011-01-15 22:05:00 Unless you're talking about server drives, or high-end consumer ones (e.g. WD's VelociRaptor) - many of these are 2.5" to reduce seek times, and spin at speeds from 10-15k rpm. Having owned a VR for a while, I can attest that they're very quick indeed :D.

Aah yes I forgot about those. I was talking about slow laptops drives designed to reduce power consumption etc.

Why clean install on the old drive and then clone?

Why not just do a fresh install on the new drive?

x2 - Makes much more sense to just forget the old drive and do a fresh install on the new one... (And yes, reformat it to get rid of the dodgy clone you already tried)

1165815 2011-01-16 18:09:00 The old HD died completely before I could clone again :horrified so I'm a bit stuffed. I borrowed my son's Win7 (he's running something called Knoppix?), Win7 runs beautifully :D, but I see that I lost about 30 Gb of the new drive on the previous cloning process. I do think this will cause future hassles, so here is the question : should one reformat the new HD totally and then reinstall Win7 or what? Remember that it cloned over the first time about 30 versions of Ubuntu that could not be deleted and never worked.

Secondly, if one should reformat - how?:o. Sorry, I see you guys answered this already but how?

Thirdly, Wainuitech, your instructions on cloning were excellent, precise, clear, thanks for that.:thanks I am keeping the ISO and the instructions in my "startup case" now.

I've checked Trademe for software - b*gger me, a full version of XP is barely cheaper than Win7 Home Edition. I lost the OEM so now I need Win7 - or should I go Linux?

1165816 2011-01-16 22:43:00 What I suggest: Wipe the drive completely, remove all traces of Linux, Windows the LOT, so you have a completely blank HDD.

Then install either XP or a better option, W7.

To wipe the drive, simply formatting it I can see being a big mess, with various partitions.

Download Paragon Partition Manager Free (www.paragon-software.com) - install it, and make a bootable CD. OR download The ISO I made From here (www.box.net). Burn the CD, boot from it, then you will see all the partitions - Right click each partition one at a time - Delete - once all done, click apply, down the bottom left. The HDD is now completely blank.

Install Windows. :)

Re you lost teh OEM> Do you still have the COA ( product key) if so you can beg/ steal or borrow a XP CD and use your own key. Mind you W7 would be better, since XP is now dead ( cant purchase anymore apart from Trademe etc), and the updates for it are being phased out.

1165817 2011-01-16 22:56:00 I would make a dual-boot system with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Agent_24 (57)
1165818 2011-01-16 23:25:00 Thanks Wainui, will do that and see how I go. B*gger, now that I've seen Win7 I don't know whether I wanna go back. Incidentally, the OEM product key sits on the side of the PC - saw that this weekend.

Yeah, my thinking is the same - dual boot but let me get over the first hurdle first.

1165819 2011-01-16 23:30:00 If you are thinking dual boot XP and Win7 it is best to install XP first then Win7.

They will need to go on separate partitions so consider that when repartitoning the new drive.

1165820 2011-01-16 23:53:00 No, rather dual boot Win7/Linux

1165821 2011-01-17 00:26:00 If you do want to dual boot with Win7 and Linux, when you partition and format your drives during Windows setup remember to keep some space free for Linux install later.

If you aren't going to do much with Linux, then 30GB or so would be fine, and use the rest for Windows.

Doing it this way will work a lot better than using Wubi as I think you tried last time.

1165822 2011-01-17 02:04:00 On a 500 Gb drive there really won't be a problem with free space me thinks.
