1165803 2011-01-12 04:08:00 I don't have many WD drives, I prefer Seagate. They run good once you get the right firmware on them ;) Agent_24 (57)
1165804 2011-01-12 17:24:00 I ordered a blue, 16 mb. Can't buy locally, about double the price so I have to depend on couriers. I'll see how it goes. Would the SATA cable be included?

1165805 2011-01-12 18:38:00 No SATA cable.

When you buy a Hard Drive thats all you get, it will (or should) come in an anti-static bag.

1165806 2011-01-12 20:27:00 Unless the shop tells you they give you a cable, you can assume they won't Agent_24 (57)
1165807 2011-01-13 19:24:00 Bl**dy hell, amazing. It was sent last night at 16:00 out of Akl, and at 08:15 this morning I had the drive in my hands. Just amazing. No SATA cable.

I'm thinking of cloning the HD, and then do a complete reinstall of XP on the new one - I mean it's bare bones now as it is so I won't lose a lot of programs. That way we can start afresh, honky dory and all that cr*p.

I could swear I had a spare SATA cable somewhere, but can't find it. Oh well, Dick Smith here I come. The search for the SATA cable also unearthed a lot of stuff I could not remember I had, like the driver CD for the onboard graphics card, etc. etc. All in all good.

After the installation of this HD, I will be waiting patiently for a week and then do the updates to XP from SP2 to SP3 et al, bacause that was where the sh*te started previously.

1165808 2011-01-13 20:54:00 ... I have had three 1TB's fail now within 6 months

Just out of curiosity, 3 out of how many? That sounds quite scary!

I've got 1 TB Black installed just over a month and not too happy with it as I found that the noise level is rather high! Not a good sign? Checked with the WD diagnosting tool and passed all tests, though.

Checked with the WD diagnosing tool and passed all tests, though . Three out of four -- three that were in the Various Customers PC's . They were all purchased at different times, from two different suppliers .

Two were very noisy after about a week, and one simply failed while I was installing windows . They were all replaced with Blues of the same size (after requesting this from the supplier) .

The remaining WD Black, I have as a backup drive if cloning customers HDD's .
Sometimes its a bit noisy, other times its OK .

1165810 2011-01-15 20:56:00 OK. The first clone of my old HD did not go according to plan. I forgot that I tried to install Ubuntu about a million times and guess what appeared on bootup of the new one - a million Ubuntu choices, without XP.

So I'm going to clean install XP on the old drive (if the thing will hold) and then clone. Question : shouldn't I format the new drive now to get rid of all the "wrong" programs?

1165811 2011-01-15 21:00:00 Why clean install on the old drive and then clone?

Why not just do a fresh install on the new drive?

1165812 2011-01-15 21:02:00 2.5" are for laptops, and while you can get a mounting kit and adapter, the performance won't be as good...Unless you're talking about server drives, or high-end consumer ones (e.g. WD's VelociRaptor) - many of these are 2.5" to reduce seek times, and spin at speeds from 10-15k rpm. Having owned a VR for a while, I can attest that they're very quick indeed :D. Erayd (23)
