2010-08-03 02:05:00 | when i used my old frames in NZ, OPSM sent them to the optician to be done. i doubt it is possible for someone to do the lenses then ship it to the frames dude. thou in NZ OPSM charges you more if you are using your own frames  | Nomad (952) | |
2010-08-03 02:06:00 | And if you don't get it quite right,do you send them back, and who pays for the alterations.? Unless you are going overseas to get glass's yourself,I wouldn't entertain it.

Just a matter of how much you're prepared to gamble. |

2010-08-03 13:57:00 | Just for fun I thought Id measure pupil centre to pupil centre myself with a pair of Vernier Callipers and a mirror. After much experimenting Ill swear the centres are 61mm. (Im now blind so problem solved) :waughh: However, this leaves us with the outside lenses dimensions. How the devil do you measure that? Are there standard frame sizes and shapes which the lenses are cut to? I see the frame has Engelhardt 140 written on the inside of the left ear piece so does that tell us anything? And by the way, I havent ignored your posts Zippety & sam m, Im just trying to work out how they can make lenses in America to fit Frames in NZ and what details I may need to provide. :) 61mm is probably pretty close. It's perhaps a tad small for an adult male, although it varies with race and face shape too. One more factor to mess with your measurements is your convergence, and parallax. If you're looking into a mirror to measure your PD, your eyes will be converged (turned in) towards a single point on the image in the mirror, which makes your PD seem narrower than it really is (distance PD is the standard starting point). As for frame shape (lens shape), yes the Englehardt bit is a clue, but the 140 is the length-to-bend of the temple. Hopefully the other temple details the model of the frame, plus the 'eye-size'. Both the model and size are required if using a remote lab. However, most labs will only cut lenses to frames that they have specifically handled. There's digital tracing equipment that can map out the contours of a frame, and in turn automatically cut the lenses for that particular shape. Expecting a lab to cut lenses for an unfamiliar frame without having the frame is near impossible. Tolerances regarding lens size and circumfrence are very small. Plastic frames are more forgiving than metal, so offshore labs offering to edge lenses without the frame may be planning to cut for a plastic frame. The other temple on your frame may detail the model. There may also be a colour code to confuse your further. Eyesize may be on the temple, or stamped across the rear of the bridge. The policy we work to is: Known frame - lab has a digital trace, No problem. Lab cuts lens w/o frame. Frame unknown to the lab - frame must be sent to the lab. We once had a guy who objected to the fitting costs, and thought he could cut and fit the lenses himself, so he ordered and was provided uncut lenses (about 70mm round diameter). Never heard the outcome, but almost certainly ended in tears given that the lenses first have to be rotated to the right axis, then moved in or out relative to the frame for the PD, then up or down for the fitting heights, then cut and beveled... all without imparting a single scratch to either lens.

2010-08-04 05:03:00 | Thanks again Paul . I must say I have quite enjoyed my little journey into optometry . :) But at the end of the day I think I can conclude that it is virtually impossible to order a set of lenses to fit an existing frame where the lens maker doesnt have the frame to obtain the outside shape including chamfers . I can live with that . Youre right too about my pupil to pupil measurement . When I stood as far back from the mirror as I could and still be able to see my pupils and Verniers, my centres moved out to 65mm . And finally, after much polishing of the old lenses with Silvo Ive only managed to waste the Silvo . :( Sure I got the coating off what ever it was but when I look through them now its has like a corrugated iron effect . Moving the head either up or down I go in focus, out, back in, out, back in, out so clearly they are now anything but progressive . :D Never mind, worth a shot . I guess its just a matter of waiting now to see what $429 brings .

2010-08-27 05:34:00 | **** me dead I was at the opticians (Spec Savers) on Monday getting an eye certificate for an endorsement. In front of me an old lady paying for I guess glasses, on the eftpos display was 748 big ones. She was calmly writing out a cheque if it was me I would be beside myself with buyers regret. I dont consider its worth spending that much on myself, if I was a car I would be wrecker bound.
