1120071 2010-07-20 20:42:00 In my family, with the medical costs so high these days, I've decided that we can only afford to keep one of the two of us in 100% condition (in stead of both of us at 50%) - eyes, teeth, everything else. So SWMBO is quite in shipshape condition these days and I am falling into disrepair. But I had a good run, it's just the frickin body that don't want to keep up with the younger soul (No, not our Russian young soul that all the elderly gents here seemed to know).

1120074 2010-07-21 02:36:00 Those root canals are typical rip off, they often don't work, but you still pay.

I would have it out and an implant,if dosh not a problem.

i had work done at the student clinic but had to see a real dentist when i graduated, root canal cost $1200 i think it was. a year after it cracked fractured, i paid $250 for extraction.

1120075 2010-07-21 02:40:00 Oh man, I am sooo lucky with my dentist. I have never been charged more than $35 for a filling! She is one of those that supports the Community Services Card and is subsidised by the Govt. It is a group practice she is with in Taupo.

Dunno how you get them, do you need to get a referral from your GP? Cos I rang up Wellington hospital dentistry up .. but every time they said they don't have a place. So after a few months, I rang every morning 7am for a week. I just went to a std dentist with maybe a 10% discount for CSC clients when I just graduated and paid the $1200 ...

1120076 2010-07-21 02:41:00 I hear you, but it is unsunsidised, and it is probably a reasonable fee. Many of the best dentists actually go overseas to OZ and europe where they can make a heck of a lot more.

Dermatologist charges $250 for an appt that might only take 15mins and write you a script.

My point exactly, another rip off merchant, they have a virtual monopoly.

Do you remember the eys specialist came from Oz a few years ago,the locals didn't like it at all.

1120078 2010-07-21 05:17:00 The Fred Hollows foundation ship came to NZ and parked up in the Auckland harbour offering to do cataract surgery for about $50 and eye. Normal cost in NZ about $3000 an eye done privately. As mentioned above they were told to move on.

Opthalmologist are $180 for an appt arn't it? But that might mean longer appt times, they do some test than just look at it (as the dermatologist). Generally optometrists do the tests and only refers you if you have gluocoma or retina degeneration and things like that ..
