1119121 2010-07-18 22:22:00 Just out of curiosity, The "How-to" page states that most fidges in teh USA have an ice-cube dispenser built in, and that most people would have no idea what an Ice tray is . Is that true?

Seems pretty far fetched .

Here in NZ the only time I have seen a fridge with an ice dispenser was in a shop . . . .

All my friends have the ice cube makers,so getting pretty common here in Ch Ch .

Sorry to say I don't have one, or feel the need for one . !

Yeah - it's true that the new ones almost all have cube makers, and they either dispense cubes or crushed ice . I bought a Samsung RS2578BB double door last October and it dispenses cold water too from the same area . The water is filtered and chilled in the refer box itself before it's dispensed .

The real reason? They are energy saving if you don't have to open the freezer to get the ice tray out and then refill it - holding the door open some more and then the refrigerator has to make up all the cold that's lost .

My wife didn't want one with the ice maker and until she actually used it, she still didn't think it was a good idea . She has totally changed her mind now as she doesn't have to mess with emptying or refilling trays of cubes .

I guess these won't sell well in the UK where they like their beer at body temperature, but youse guys are happy with cold beer and drinks - right?

That's a very interesting observation. But I defer to your authority because of not having tasted monkey emissions myself.

1119123 2010-07-18 22:28:00 Only time we ever use ice in this household is for my bourbon, and I just crab a bag from the servo.

I would like a fridge with an Ice dispenser, But I can't see myself ever investing that amount of money in a fridge.

1119125 2010-07-19 00:47:00 A sidebar is that the electric companies are required to offer discounts and incentives for [people to buy new refrigerators and freezers as an energy conservation tool.

The new boxes are a lot more efficient than even units just ten years old and the electric usage is significantly lower.

We had a big vertical freezer that cost us about $24/month to operate and the new one we got costs that much for a year.

They pencil-out pretty quick if you buy new ones, get the cash rebate and the lowered usage fees.
