1120350 2010-07-21 00:32:00 Getting back to the 787 ... if you take a look at the video at around 14 - 18 second mark, you can see the back portion of the engine cowl opening and closing for reverse thrust ... wonder how often they're going to have to replace that part ?? SP8's (9836)
1120351 2010-07-21 00:35:00 Get with it, what people are saying here is that Englander planes are bastards to work on.
The Englander designers just didnt care about the poor air plane mechanics who had to work on them. Lets talk about a mythical valve.
The designers should have oh someone will have to change this valve we will need to position it so there is access around it to get to the attachment hardware and the hose/ tube connectors on it.
Stupid Englanders put in the valve where you have to work blind to get at the connections at the back because the Englander said its going there and I am off to the pub for a pint and crisps.
The Americans oh we cant get at the connections off this valve if we put in this compartment, no problems we put the valve in the opposite compartment and turn it around 180 degrees.
If you want to see near perfect sensible aircraft design look at a Bell 205 helicopter a total retard can change any component with having to use a mirror and special tool like a bent spanner or crowsfoot on an universal.
Whoopee snot about the RR over the Alison I bet the Allison was more reliable.

1120352 2010-07-21 00:47:00 The Allisons were totally unreliable and underpowered ... hence the change to Rolls Royce to keep the bloody P51's from falling out of the sky !!

My last comment for the day ... I'm off to the pub for a packet of crisps and a pint of Speights !!

1120353 2010-07-21 00:49:00 They were underpowered not unreliable. Merlin was unreliable.
If I was flying over the sea in single engined plane I sure wouldnt want my ass in Merlin engined plane.

1120354 2010-07-21 00:58:00 787 again .. supping on my breakfast beer .... Boeing has selected General Electric and Rolls-Royce to develop engines for the new airplane.

Wonder where Allison is ... Oh wait ... she's behind the bar pouring me another beer !!!

1120355 2010-07-21 01:23:00 British aircraft; designed by idiots .... Oh wait ... weren't the P51's retrofitted with the RR Merlins to make them faster & more reliable ??
Altitude? Merlins had a 2 stage supercharger which matched the P51 high altitude behaviour quite well.
Early Merlins needed more engine than oil changes.

1120356 2010-07-21 03:41:00 Getting back to design, I always thought that the Gloster Meteor was a beautiful looking aircraft, while the North American F86 Sabre was a heap of flying junk. Changed my mind when the F100 Super Sabre was flying as it seemed a much better balanced plane.
Loved the story about the USAF hiring a Concord to play the part of a Russian Backfire bomber. US fighters set off in chase to pretend to shoot the Concord out of the sky, but couldn't catch it.

Would have loved to see the TSR2 in action. There is one on display at RAF Museum, Cosford, but I only got to RAF Colindale (Hendon) on my last visit to UK.

1120357 2010-07-21 06:58:00 F86 a very good plane in its time, its sent a lot of commie pilots to a flaming death thats why I have aways loved it. prefect (6291)
1120358 2010-07-21 07:05:00 The Zero was not bad. Very good for Kamikaze efforts. Snorkbox (15764)
1120359 2010-07-21 07:53:00 Getting . . .

Would have loved to see the TSR2 in action . There is one on display at RAF Museum, Cosford, but I only got to RAF Colindale (Hendon) on my last visit to UK .
They are having a bit of trouble getting it started, it's the old Lucas syndrome .

For a paper aeroplane, the TSR2 was not all that great, there have been much greater flights of fancy; The Rotodyne promised miracles according to it's publicity, the Brabazon would have revolutionised air travel except for a couple of minor difficulties, the Concord would have been magic according to it's publicity, but they had to give them all away when not a single buyer could be found .
Any aircraft can be magnificent provided reality can be kept at bay . ;)
