2010-07-24 00:01:00 | I think Specsavers are very good. They gave me a complete three quarter hour eye test for $10, which was a special, specific to Nelson, I think. The optician was extremely helpful. Two pairs of glasses cost me $170. ( I got a $30 discount voucher in the post, which I used) NB After having the test, don't buy immediately, they send out big discount vouchers later if you wait, to get you to buy. The lenses they gave me, are perfect for me. I believe there is a 2 year warranty.

2010-07-24 22:02:00 | Paul.Cov Probably you refer to Hydrofluoric acid. en.wikipedia.org Yeah, that could be the stuff. I remember being surprised that such a nasty acid was in a plastic bottle, but now that I see it eats glass I begin to comprehend. Must compliment the boss on his/her knowledge of the risks... fatal poisoning from skin contact! Sheesh. Is that how they justify our ACC levies?

2010-07-24 22:24:00 | There have been others who have used sandpaper to try to remove marks (Sigh), so I must compliment you on having a far more civilised tactic! My Mother cleaned some spots off my Dad's glasses the other day with a steelo pad - not a good outcome. She thought they were the cheap Warehouse set and not the recently purchased prescription set. | Jen (38) | |

She thought they were the cheap Warehouse set and not the recently purchased prescription set. Meths for stubborn marks, or just a simple smudge from a bar of soap, plus water for the oily marks is pretty much all that lenses ever need to get them spotless. For 2 pot compounds stuck to lenses trypically meths, and some lengthy patient rubbing will still get things off. One of the worst is when folks use superglue to try to secure a loose lens in place... it always ends up on the lens surface and is a bugger to remove. Acetone is the last line of defense, and needs to be used with caution because it will instantly ruin the surface if the lens is made from polycarbonate. Other plastics however are ok with acetone, and it fairly quickly dissolves most deposits. A not so common household solvent is eucalyptus oil, which is almost as good as acetone, and is safe to use on all lens materials. And for anyone who may wonder... I once thought I'd try a lens cleaning solution on my CD lens cleaners bristles and give it a spin in the drive. Bad idea, as these solutions need to be physically wiped off, and if left to dry they leave a residue... as I found after having to dismantle and clean the DVD lens... never a fun job. |

2010-07-27 03:26:00 | The key word in there is FROM . Apparently very few people end up getting the advertised prices once they have seen the selection that it applies to, and been fed the 'upgrades' to get to a semi decent lens product . They don't halve the price if you only want one pair either, as their entire operation is built around selling loads of their frames, whether you need that second pair or not . If the OP is considering SpecSavers I'd encourage him to get prices (quotes) for the frame of his choice, with multifocal and AR coating included in order to get close to a product comparable to what he's had . I strongly doubt he'll find the price is anywhere near the $399 mentioned above . It's a bit like comparing getting two 200MHz Pentiums to replace a dead P4 . Sounds good until you dig a bit deeper and understand the offerings . Works as you'd expect . Ok for some tasks, less than wonderful for other tasks . Anybody want an old Pentium? Works fine! How absolutely prophetic of you Paul . :D I decided Id get a quote from SpecSavers in case my polishing effort was a failure . (Im still working at it but becoming less and less confident) :crying Anyway, did the eye test and was told that my eyes were surprisingly good for my age and new glasses were not a problem . And the rest of the conversation went like this: Great, now how much? $1078! What, youre quoting two for $399 . Ahh yes, but these ones quoted on to you have the second highest class lenses available . Well what about the bottom class? Unfortunately they are getting obsolete and hard to come by . Ok, just put new lenses in my old frames for the second pair, how much then? Same price Sir, you see the second pair of frames is free so there is no point using yours . Ok, how much to put some standard lens in my existing frames so I can use that pair in my workshop or where there is a risk of damage . That will be an additional $499 Sir . But youre advertising two pair for $399 . Yes, but that is a special basic package deal that doesn't include repairs . Special alright, stick your glasses where the sun dont shine . So there you have it, the advertised price is simply advertising Bait and bears no resemblance to what the final price will tally up to . I wonder how many suckers there are out there that fall for this rubbish?
