1119020 2010-07-15 09:03:00 Hi there I am looking into purchasing an iPhone and given the significant cost have been doing some research namely on eBay. I'm reasonably new to all of this but understand that most of the US iPhones come locked to AT&T. If I were to purchase a used (contract expired) iPhone 3GS from eBay would it be possible and if so how straightforward is it, to unlock the phone for use on the Telecom XT network. Also does this process require "jailbreaking" and does this all work on the new iPhone OS?
Any help, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.

1119022 2010-07-15 09:36:00 Thanks for the reply although the link doesn't give me any information on unlocking for XT etc sorry if the topic is frowned upon in this forum. JMoore (9352)
1119023 2010-07-15 10:08:00 You'll probably have to jailbreak it. Obviously, it wont tell you on the Apple site. Since theyre the ones updating the firmware, so you cant jailbreak them Speedy Gonzales (78)
1119024 2010-07-15 11:27:00 I'm not too sure about it, but personally I'd shy away from the iPhone for reasons just like that. Grab yourself a nice Nexus One, or one of the Motorola Droids ;)

On a serious note though, Jailbreaking will work, but it's at your own risk, and not the sort of thing we go into here ;)

...Which is why I suggest importing a Nexus One, or something like this:
store.telecom.co.nz

I'm sure they're now selling the Moto Milestone now though ?!?!

Pretty much the sickest phone out atm.

And yea you would have to jailbreak then unlock. Not too much off a mission but at the moment the 4.0 jailbreak and unlock hasn't been released by the dev team. I think they are waiting for apple to release 4.1 so that the exploit they are using can't be patched in 4.1.

Also there is the death grip issue...

1119026 2010-07-15 12:56:00 Thanks for the suggestions, the reason I was looking at an iPhone was because it seems to have a large support base for unlocking etc etc but I am more than willing to look elsewhere. I basically just want a decent quality phone with wi-fi, gcal synching and possibly touch screen. Prefer not to have a slide out keyboard. If I were to get an iPhone it would probably be a 3GS off eBay given my budget - am looking to stay under $600 for now but willing to go 2nd hand.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Android OS so am keen to look into that. HTC Android or is that Motorola? Any good Android phones in this price bracket?
JMoore (9352)
1119027 2010-07-15 13:14:00 Re your budget - it depends what you mean by 'good'. If you're after any of the recent high-end models, you're unlikely to get them for that kind of price unless there's something wrong with them.

Slightly out of your stated range ($720 buy now), but would you consider this (www.trademe.co.nz)?

1119028 2010-07-15 21:54:00 I just sold my iPhone 3G for $650, so good luck there ;)

Android is an independent OS put out by Google, that's used by a variety of phone manufacturers such as HTC, Motorola, LG etc

To be honest you can't get much better syncing with Google Calendar than a phone running an OS made by Google.

In other notes, iOS4 jailbreaking *is* possible, yes it's supposedly fixed in 4.1 which is now out in Beta, but no, it likely won't take very long for them to figure out how to do it again with the new version.

1119029 2010-07-16 07:46:00 Jailbreak won't take long to come out. If you could put a linux distro on iPhone like you could on iPods then i'd buy it. the iPhone technology (iPhone 4 exempt) is pretty good. i have yet to come across another multi touch phone as good in terms of hardware. unfortunately the apple OS is a bit limiting compared to the hardware thats in them The Error Guy (14052)
