2011-01-05 16:32:00 | My desktop computer has progressively become slower and slower. I am on a cable ISP. I am running Internet Explorer 6.0. I don't have a lot of saved files on my hard drive. (Size 149 gb, free space 125 gb.) I have Zone Alarm Extreme Security Suite. I have cleared my history, emptied my temp files, run my defrag and disc cleanup tools. Still it is slow, slow, slow. Any suggestions would be appreciated. | thiggy (11892) | |
2011-01-05 18:38:00 | The actual day to day running of the computer or the internet has become slower? If its the computer download and run Hijack this and save the log file it produces then paste it here for analysis as it shows all the running processes | gary67 (56) | |
2011-01-05 19:22:00 | Malware is the first thing to check but most likely it has just become cluttered. The cleaning you did helps to a point, but eventually it is better to back up your stuff and do a complete fresh install of Windows. | pctek (84) | |
2011-01-05 19:42:00 | Do what Gary says. Most likely it is running too many unnecessary processes. I would be very suspicious of the load ZA is imposing, as well. IE6 is not a good choice, either, as its security is questionable. Update it or use Firefox.

2011-01-05 21:13:00 | Agree with all the above. If you are confident it's not malware causing it or after you have tried that (spybot, adaware, malware bytes, free programs pick one) you could try CCleaner which does a good job of cleaning unneccessay files. also you can go to add remove programs and go through the list removing any unneeded or unwanted programs. Windows never runs as fast as after a fresh install, but you can get it pretty close.

2011-01-06 05:19:00 | The problem is with slow downloads, not the internal processes. Run windows Updates manually - what you may find is the auto update is slowlyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy downloading or stuck in the background every time you are on the Internet, or the Computer starts. IF the updates are coming through - which I suspect they may be, since IE is only showing IE6 - the auto updates could be trying to update to IE8 (as they will) UNLESS you have disabled auto updates. To do a manual update in XP, click start / All Programs / Windows update (pic attached) - once IE opens, select Express, download and install anything thats there. keep running the updates manually until nothing is left. If its updates causing the problem, then once finished, the PC will speed back up to normal.
