1167309 2011-01-05 16:08:00 Some time ago my laptop was replaced under insurance. They gave me a Toshiba Satellite pro running Vista. It came with two recovery discs.
Yesterday I decided to do a complete reinstall using the recovery discs.
I had backed up the hard drive to an external drive.
On reinstallation I find that the OS is now WinXP, not Vista.

What gives?
Wrong recovery discs?
My incompetence?

I dont think I can use the back up because it was made in Vista.Right?

I am compute illiterate but trying to learn a bit by experimentation as I have no one nearby I can go to for help.

1167311 2011-01-05 19:09:00 looks like you were given XP recovery Discs, not Vista.

Sometimes, manufactures give you the option of running Vista, or "downgrading" to XP, but if thats the case there would be two sets of discs, one for each OS.

If it had Vista Business it would have come with the XP "Downgrade".
Personally I think that's an improvement. XP was far better than Vista.

Leave it there.

1167314 2011-01-05 19:22:00 From my experience a lot of the machines that had the xp downgrade option came with the xp recovery discs only.
If you wanted the vista recovery discs you had to make your own using the recovery disc creator software that would be on the machine.

I also have access to a Vista business PC if that's any help for reading your backups and maybe we can copy to other media if you want to keep XP.

1167316 2011-01-05 19:42:00 While you're reinstalling OSs why not upgrade to Windows 7? :D pcuser42 (130)
1167317 2011-01-05 20:00:00 I like XP but the Vista basic had was OK. My only concern was that I had the hard drive backed up in Vista and I think I need it to recover the info.

Will 7 do it because I wouldn't mind upgrading to that.

Thats another option thanks snorkbox. Will keep that in mind too.
