1166730 2011-01-03 19:01:00 Has anyone else struck a DVD Drive that will play DVD’s fine, but not CD’s?

I put a CD in it and the green light flashes and next thing I get a message “Please Insert Disk”.

I’ve tried a variety of CD’s and DVD’s and as I say DVD’s are fine but CD’s can’t be seen.

Anyone any ideas or suggestions? :thanks

1166732 2011-01-03 20:41:00 I would imagine it's a dying or faulty drive.
I've had it happen on my old Xbox. It read cd's fine but stopped reading its games properly after a while, eventually stopped reading discs altogether.

1166733 2011-01-03 21:03:00 As far as I know the CD and DVD lasers are different within the same unit and thus one can be 'soft' due to usage whilst the other may still work ok. zqwerty (97)

Ahhh, I wondered if there were different lasers, in fact I still don't know how the drive difterentiates between a CD and a DVD.

I'm picking it's a new drive coming up though. :(

1166736 2011-01-04 00:58:00 If you know the correct potentiometer to tweak and which way and mark it with a black marker to return it to previous setting it is often possible to get a few more months life out of the device.

Move the pot in 10deg intervals if it seems to be worse move it in the opposite direction back through where you marked it and then try again the opposite way, 30deg of movement should do it, if you tweak too much laser diode will fail they work within and at the limits of a carefully controlled current hence the problem in the first place.

Most failures occur early with multiple cd players as the have to determine the presence or otherwise of a cd at a distance before playing it.

On PS2's they conveniently mark them dvd and cd, making it easy to choose the correct pot.

CAUTION, do not look at laser whilst it is powered up.

You have no idea the difficulty I had disguising my pleasure at the thought of tweaking a potentiometer again. :D

So off I went and borrowed the chap next doors Fluro Jacket (Safety is Paramount) and got stuck in.

Well getting it out was easy but getting it apart required a bit of thought. In the absence of any Engineering Instructions it seemed like wifes tin opener was the best option.

Having got into it, you can imagine my disappointment when there wasn’t a knob to be turned. :groan: There wasn’t even a cut off shaft with screwdriver slot in the end.

Anyway, I knew you wouldn’t lead me astray so on went the magnifying headset.

Lo and behold here were two microscopic little potentiometers on the tiny PC board on the back of the laser. So, gave them both a 30 degree clockwise and no change, DVD still worked fine but CD didn’t. Ok, backed them both back 60 degrees anti-clockwise and neither worked.

By now the novelty of tweaking potentiometers had worn off so I made the assumption that the drive was knackered and even if I got it going it would only be a temporary measure.

It then occurred to me that it may have been under warranty, but wasn’t now, so I found its date of manufacture, April 2003 so I guess that puts an end to that.

Which leads me to where do you fellas and fellases’s suggest I buy another one?

The stuffed one was an ATA/IDE one, as is the remaining one, but the Motherboard does have two SATA connections, both unused. My concern here is if by installing a SATA CD/DVD drive I would start some sort of Christian/Muslim relationship?

Anyway, which is the best Online Store to buy these things from?

:thanks everyone, I’m off to return the neighbours Fluro, remember, “Safety is Paramount”! ;)
