1166600 2011-01-03 04:35:00 i have an old machine (6 -7 years or so) - don't laugh - and just recently I have the issue where web access (whether it be downloading podcasts through Itunes or web pages) will not connect. This happens all the time recently (over the last three to four months) and I have to keep hitting refresh which eventually clears the "block" and away we go again for another 5 mins or so.

Is there a way of telling whether there is something on my machine or whether it is an issue with the ISP - xnet - don't laugh again - or another aspect I haven't thought of. This is getting really frustrating now and I'm not in the financial position to buy a new machine for another 6 to 12 months.

Thanks

(Have run MSE and spybot over the last week or so and they come back as fine).

1166603 2011-01-03 07:52:00 DNS, Domain name server, so who provides you with your DNS. I think xnet do their own DNS. not sure The Error Guy (14052)
1166604 2011-01-03 08:51:00 I used a program called what's running net, when my Firefox browser took about a minute or so to open a web page. It found some rogue screen saver aaa type files trying to connect. So I blocked them with firewall. I also reset the hosts file, which I had built up, which may have also contributed to slowness. Microsoft now has a "fix it" utility to do that or can do manually. kahawai chaser (3545)

Can you give me the name or link so I can give it a try ? cheers

I used a program called what's running net

Just had a quick look at this. Looks well outside my capabilities. Would this fix my issues with the failed downloads on itunes also though ?

1166606 2011-01-03 09:13:00 Here: - Microsoft Host file fix it (support.microsoft.com)... kahawai chaser (3545)
1166607 2011-01-03 09:44:00 What's running net won't fix things, but can show anything (as in url's) trying to connect and other live running processes. I think you right click on the host processes if I recall then displays url on RH side. You should see, e.g. Google servers. Then visit the url's, and if look odd then enter in your firewall to block them. That's what I did and worked.

Hijack This, is the other way to try find processes interfering, but it did not pick up the rogue interference, or was not apparent.

1166608 2011-01-03 11:19:00 Having the MTU setting on your modem/router below 1480 can cause this. The Windows default is 1500. mzee (3324)
1166609 2011-01-04 01:00:00 Who is your ISP? I had this problem for 2 months with Telecom, mine wasn't anything to do with:
PC
Modem
DNS
Line

What they did in the end I'm not sure but it's now resolved. Something to do with configurations at their end as far as I understood.
