1166565 2011-01-02 23:02:00 Hi guys.

As some will know I was gifted an old laptop, of which I am very grateful.

Problem is it's very slow. I tried threats, but still dragging the chain...

I did a format reinstall of Windows XP Home and have done all the sodden updates.

It only has 512 MB's shared ram and can take a max of 1 Gb.

Problem is, being on Invalids have few resource to be able to update.

I was told, today, that it's possible to strip Windows to make it run faster.

If this is true, can you please, explain in lay man's terms what can be done?

Thought of Linux, but when I tried installing couldn't get WiFi going and I need that.

Thanks for any advise,

Ian.

1166566 2011-01-02 23:59:00 What are the full specs of the lappy ... CPU especially. You may be able to pick up some cheap RAM off Trademe which would help ... unless it's "naturally" slow because of the CPU.

Not sure of what can be taken off XP ... but most of the "excess" just sits there and does nothing unless your using it anyway ... may be something else causing the problem.

Use the 'Safe' settings I am presuming you have SP3, I have a few other tips which will be useful to you, will leave till later after you have done this.

With those specs it should be fairly fast, I was using a Pentium 3 1Ghz with 375 meg ram and it was use-able after all mods applied from Black Viper plus a few specials which I will post later.

1166570 2011-01-03 01:02:00 Also post Hijackthis log so we can see what other crap is running. Make sure you have System Restore on so that if you make a 'blue' you can recover elegantly without a re-install. zqwerty (97)

I had a look at the site. Um didn't mean nothing, to me, so before I stuffed it up I closed it.

Way beyond me. Dah...

1166574 2011-01-03 02:01:00 You have a fair amount running in the background which could be only used when necessary like Google update for instance. zqwerty (97)
