1121237 2010-07-22 03:21:00 Lately my car CD player is peeving me off. When I play a CD, usually at around song 8 "scratches" appear (like with old vinyls) in the sound. (I call it scratches, but one may also think of a microphone being rubbed over by hand, that kind of thing). By song 10 it is gone. I've tried different brands of CD's, because it even does the same with the originals. No change, so it can't be the CD itself. Tried various burning software to make copies of the originals - no change. I do not know anything about the machanics of CD player, so I thought I should ask here for brilliant ideas and solutions. I am currently listening to The Canadian Tenors and this anomaly is really annoying.

Thanks in advance

1121239 2010-07-22 03:30:00 O gads. Remember you're talking to a clueless *rs*h*l*. What does that mean and how? It's a Sony CD player, and I never had it out ever.

1121240 2010-07-22 04:49:00 Run a CD lens cleaner disc thru it a couple of times :) Zippity (58)
1121241 2010-07-22 08:11:00 static.howstuffworks.com gives you a good idea what it looks like inside (I've pulled apart dozens of 'em, they're all more or less the same).

The silver assembly with the orange ribbon cable coming out of it moves back and forth, could be either the rail/rails it rides on, or the worm/corkscrew gear that moves it.

1121242 2010-07-22 20:48:00 CD lens cleaner - you think it will do something Zippitty?

Thanks for the instructions on how to fix the rails. Now just to get the unit out, and then (concentrate you b*st*rd), ..............

1121243 2010-07-22 20:49:00 Do I put some kind of grease on the rods?

1121244 2010-07-22 21:44:00 Clean with soft brush, should be enough, I find white grease (silicon grease) often makes them stutter and grab at various points, it's too viscous. If you can see obvious dirt/hairs/rubbish stuck to rails use isopropyl alcohol (IPA) with cotton bud to remove, do not try to clean everything and over apply cleaning fluid, be sparing.

Use aforementioned soft brush to generally clean all moving parts/lens of cat hair etc, be very careful using a light touch, no monkey stuff.

Don't look into laser whilst unit is powered up.
