1120990 2010-07-21 11:05:00 Little brother knocked my new 1.5TB HDD off the desk and rooted it. Not concerned about the data on it because I can get it back but more just pissed off at his lack of attention and clumsiness.

When I plug it in it isn't recognized by the PC and I can hear it clunking and churning. I presume I can't do anything to fix it and it's well and truly busted?

1120991 2010-07-21 12:43:00 If it's clunking, it's junk - ie, physically damaged and unusable.

Data can likely still be recovered by a data recovery company, but you're not interested in that as you say.

1120994 2010-07-21 21:05:00 can't you take it back to the store?Damage caused by misuse is not covered under any warranty.

IF they didn't bother looking for any damage it may slip through, but at some stage there may be evidence of physical damage caused by it being dropped. (even by accident)

1120995 2010-07-21 21:36:00 Snorkbox may be right, it may be covered by your contents insurance, as may be the data recovery?

I can vouch for these guys: www.datarecovery.co.nz

1120996 2010-07-21 23:10:00 That's why I have all my drives inside the computer, they can't fall anywhere.

Physical shock + clunking sounds to me like head damage.

They still can, if you throw the box out of your window!:D

Similar to what darkstar09 would probably like to inflict on his little brother!! :D

With all the drives in it, it's rather heavy. I suspect I would have to drag it over there and push it out rather than throw it... :p
