1120869 2010-07-21 09:59:00 Got a persons PC, cant recover the data either - ran a check for any bad sectors, thought there may be a couple or so -- looking at the number of bad sectors the HDD is Slightly Knackered (www.imagef1.net.nz) I'd say. & look at the progress meter (320GB drive)

Its been scanning for around four hours so far. the last numbers are blurred because each sector counted is stuffed ----- :crying

Think they will learn now ?

1120870 2010-07-21 10:21:00 For a while but long term, probably not :-) gcarmich (10068)
1120871 2010-07-21 10:23:00 Ouch. I've recently started doing weekly offsite backups (i.e. taking a spare HDD to work and leaving it there), in case my house burns down etc. somebody (208)
1120872 2010-07-21 10:34:00 I somehow doubt that backups will be performed in the future. Mostly as a number of people don't know how to do one and if they did they may not know how to restore. Snorkbox (15764)

1120874 2010-07-21 10:50:00 Ouch. I've recently started doing weekly offsite backups (i.e. taking a spare HDD to work and leaving it there), in case my house burns down etc. Thats a very good practice

Seen a number of people doing backups to either the same HDD, another HDD in the PC, OR even to a removable drive but leaving it plugged and in the same room/on the desk -- really it is asking for trouble/useless.

If the PC is stolen, the house burns down, the PC has a power problem -- POOF! all backups gone as well.
Are you a spinrite user? curious Nope, that screen shot is from HDD Regenerator (www.dposoft.net) -- Not that I'd trust any drive with many bad sectors, only use it testing for failed sectors.
Sometimes after running the program, the drive concerned is now readable enough to recover some data. Tomorrow will be "Interesting"

Amen - and it's quite scary how many businesses go to all the trouble/expense of buying an LTO tape drive and fancy server backup software, and then leave the tapes in the server room, or in a drawer in the boss's office!!! :groan:

1120876 2010-07-21 10:58:00 I have run 2 auto backups on 2 differant external hdds One hdd is a fireproof hdd thats bolted to the wall in my room and other hdd goes out into the shed in a sealed box. :) I also make a 3rd backup of my VERY inportent files onto a DVD disc. :)

Never had a problem here. But I do know how it files to lost files have lost about 10gb's of files before I got a backup drive years and years ago.

The frequency of my backups relates to the age of my hard drive.
I back up to usb stick which is on my breakdown truck key ring so if office or house burns down I can restart my digital life.

1120878 2010-07-21 21:19:00 Yes my backup drive remains unplugged when not backing up. Then I have a second one which doesn't live in the house in case of burglary. pctek (84)
