| 1121228 | 2010-07-23 22:34:00 | I like the cyclists who ride down the footpath and then suddenly turn right or left and ride over the pedestrian crossing. But there are idiots in both camps and I don't think you can tar all with the same brush. |

| 1121229 | 2010-07-23 23:03:00 | We have Rotary Pathways (can.org.nz) in Napier for people in wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walk the dog and cyclists etc. There have been many an incident with the racing bike brigade running dogs over etc. Some skate boarders can be just as bad. Had a friend on a mobility scooter who had his jack russell knocked out by a skate boarder. Next time he saw him he planted his mobility scooter right in front of him and sent him for a six a. :) |

The problem is as soon as you put pedestrians (including "crumblies" on mobility scooters) and dogs into the same recreational space as more mobile recreational users (skateboards, roller-blades, bikes) you are asking for trouble. It is very hard (impossible?) for a cyclist/skater/blader travelling at 20-25 km/h (or faster) to change direction (or instantly stop) in the same time that a pedestrian can change direction. Pedestrians are extremely unpredictable from a directional point of view, whereas, on wheels, you tend to be subject to Newton's First Law (en.wikipedia.org). Ideally, those fast moving recreational users should be separated from the more vulnerable/unpredictable ones... |

| 1121232 | 2010-07-24 00:02:00 | Actually in my post it was a roller blade user who knocked the jack russell out. The thing is these roller bladers and racing cyclists don't slow down when they come up to groups of people with dogs. A mate and I were walking 2 dogs along there once and the next thing there was this scrapping sound and this guy comes flying past us lying on the ground with his bike, after he had hit one of my mates dogs. People who saw it happen said he didn't even slow down when approaching us from behind. :) |
