| 1121218 | 2010-07-23 09:09:00 | Come back with that idea when licensing, registration and warranting catches up with the control of "b holes" in cars. Manage your own agro. it does, disqualified drivers are now arrested and frequently jailed. I cycle, motorcycle, 4 x4, and drive class 5. The lycra clad b holes have totaly destroyed the road for the average transport cyclist. Here is an excellent example of their arrogance. Tamaki drive in auckland has 2 YES 2 sets of cycle lanes on the wide footpaths on eitherside of the road. being a good little cyclist on my rust stained cycle i was riding on the cycleway into town suddenly the traffic in the inside lane dissapeared. Then two lycra clad B HOLES on multi thousand dollar alloy cycles came past me. ON THE ROAD TWO ABREAST yabbering to eack other taking up the whole lane and forcing all the trafic on the inside lane to follow them. such people should not be allowed to use ANYTHING ON THE ROAD FULL STOP. PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH. |

| 1121220 | 2010-07-23 13:02:00 | Hell, user, I'll bite at 'angry's' troll (now there's a username that seems well-chosen!). Please don't let your jealousy of people who can afford to own machines that are better than yours cloud your view. The Tamaki Drive cycle paths (not cycle lanes) of which you speak were/are not designed for the high performance bikes that whiz past you on the road, while you are tootling along the cycle path. These paths are also well-used by joggers, walkers, roller-bladers and families on bikes out for a gentle ride - often all at the same time. Put high performance bikes into that mix and you would have carnage, worse than you see now. Even the council admits that the (badly-maintained) paths are not suitable for 'serious' recreational cyclists who want to travel at 30-40km/h +. When the cycle paths were instituted, the popularity of recreational cycling was nowhere near what it is now and the kind of riding being done back then was an entirely different type of riding. The council is just now putting the finishing touches on the on-road cycle lanes at the moment. Although they are not ideal (finishing abruptly multiple times on the 8km stretch between Ngapipi Rd and St Heliers) they will help provide some structure for all the traffic that uses that stretch of road. They are certainly better than what was there. Apparrently lycra offends your sensibilities too ("lycra clad b holes") - another example of your intolerance. Why should the way someone dresses make you so upset? I wear lycra for two reasons: it's much more comfortable than other materials (cotton chafes like hell and is cold when wet, especially at this time of the year) and it is generally brightly-coloured and therefore safer than a black raincoat. Admittedly, it is a tad chilly at the start of a ride at the moment, and it's not particularly flattering to 'generous' figures, and doesn't provide much in the way of protection should your body hit the road for any reason... As mentioned elsewhere, there are always going to be idiot cyclists, just like there is always going to be idiot motorists. I suspect that idiot cyclists you see are probably just as bad when they are behind the wheel of their "multi-thousand dollar" motor vehicles. There are a lot more motorists than cyclists so unfortunately, than means that if the percentage of idiots in the population is a constant, then the actual number of idiot drivers far exceeds the actual number of idiot cyclists. Tweak'e has it in one: police enforcement - visibly - is the only way to change behaviour, for all road users. Unfortunately, the Police are too busy catching drivers travelling at 104km/h on the open road to actually pay much attention to things that would make overall road usage safer for everyone. EDIT: Maybe I should pay attention to my signature.... EDIT 2: Just re-read angry's post "multi thousand dollar alloy cycles" - you'd be hard-pressed to find an alloy bike being sold for much more than a couple of thousand, even with top running gear on it. If you want to talk big dollars, talk carbon fibre. |

| 1121222 | 2010-07-23 15:24:00 | the cause of all this and the cure to it, is for the police to actually bother to enforce the laws for once. |

| 1121224 | 2010-07-23 20:37:00 | On the point of cyclists jumping red lights, it makes me see red as one day it may be me coming the other way that wipes one of the idiots out. It would be a very difficult thing to live with. | gcarmich (10068) | ||

I don't think I said that anywhere Mike - I did however mention 'idiot cyclists'. Anyone who holds up following traffic either deliberately out of mishlchievousness or malice or because they aren't paying attention to the traffic around them falls into this category. Please note: there are motorists like this too... |

| 1121226 | 2010-07-23 22:04:00 | I saw a police man standing by the lights in central Nelson this week writing down numbers of cars and bikes jumping the red lights and his mate was round the corner pulling them in. I wonder what the % of cars versus bikes was. My guess was alot of cars and a few bikes so they do get out and do some road control sometimes. However I see here in Nelson that the majority of idiots on bikes are actually teenagers and youths and not serious cyclists I wonder why Nelson is different to the rest of the country | gary67 (56) | ||

It would be a very difficult thing to live with. I could live with it very easily and I would sue the estate of the dead cyclist for any scratches on my vehicle. |
