| 1122045 | 2010-07-25 23:08:00 | :2cents: About 9 years ago I had a bad angina attack and ended up having a stent put in one of the major cardiac arteries .... the surgeon told me to stop smoking, saying that where the blockage was, meant my first heat attack may have been my one and only. Soon as I left the hospital doors (around 4pm) .... lit up a smoke .... had one more before bed. Got up in the morning lit one up, had one decent drag and flicked the smoke over the neighbour fence. Never had another one after that ... cold turkey after 40 -50 day. One thing that I was told by a good friend, also a reformed smoker, was it only takes 30 seconds to give up .... sounds ridiculous, but if you do something else when the craving comes along, it disappears pretty quick. Carrying a bottle of water is a good thing ... have a sip rather than a puff. Final :2cents: After about six months I found I wasn't coughing as much, not getting short of breath, and to date, I've never had the colds and flu that I used to get when I smoked ... or the symptoms were much less and recovery quicker. It's not easy, but REALLY worth it. 30 seconds & will power ... all it takes !! Good luck !! |

| 1122047 | 2010-07-26 00:57:00 | As a few have said, 99% of it is in the head. I tried all the other stuff before I finally came to that realisation. So anything that will get your head to that space has got to be good. My personal one was Alan Carr's book "Easy way to stop smoking", it's not about methodologies or tools it's just about getting to the right head space, sort of like self hypnosis. Defining line for me: "Before you start reading this, grab a packet of smokes and have one if you feel like it while you're reading." I read the book in a couple of hours, threw the smokes in the fire, two packs of tobacco a week to zero and still smoke free... except when I get tanked, then I bludge one and wake up the next morning with a hell of a hangover, useful reminder. :yuck: :o |

Pretending he is: Had a minor setback tonight, caved and had one about an hour ago. I'm not sure if I'm in the right mindset TBH, only giving up 'cos I have to, not because I want to... At least ubergeek85 is honest. :waughh: Hopefully all of the good advice given on this thread will help someone to quit but imo ubergeek85 will probably continue until major medical problems occur. |

| 1122049 | 2010-07-26 01:13:00 | I<snip> One good reason to quit, I realised later, was that if you want to smell nice, don't smoke . I did not know that smokers STINK! Nowadays I can smell a smoker at 100 paces . <snip> This reminded me of a funny thing (I thought it was funny anyway) that I saw this morning . An attractive young lady waiting to cross at the lights, sprayed herself with some perfume, with a lit cigarette in the other hand . Two things: 1 . Lucky she did not combust: perfume + light cigarette = bang! (potential) 2 . It takes a lot more than a couple of sprays of perfume to get rid of the stink of cigarette smoke from clothing . She's obviously wasting her hard-earned on two things: cigarettes and perfume . |

All the patches, gums and other aids are useless. Ten years ago, I was a 25+ a day man. One day I said to my wife that I wanted to buy a new PC. She said: "Fine, but you can't touch capital". That got me thinking. At the time, my drugs of choice were costing me $10 a packet. $70 a week, $300 a month, $3650 a year :) "Bugger it" I said to myself, "I want a new computer and the only way I can do it is to stop smoking". So started my journey/new life style. The only person that I was going to cheat if I smoked was me. No one else! From that day, 30 November 2000, I have not smoked a puff. I went complete cold turkey overnight. Was it hard? Hell yes. Do I regret it? No way. The cure is in your hands (mind) :) :) :) Good Luck. You can do it. |
