1122033 2010-07-25 08:24:00 Well done!

My wife and I quit 3 months ago, using patches and logenzes from quitline. With the patches you need scissors or a knife to open the packet - use them, they do make a difference.

I ditched the gum as I was getting sick and migraines with it. You are supposed to take a few chews to release the (acrid) flavour, then 'park' in in your cheek between your gum and cheek, till you feel you need some more chews, but I found I was chewing it like regular gum - which perhaps you are doing?

The lozenges seem to work better, they taste like a minty quick-eze but have the same shape and look as a flattened mentos, and you just suck - and - park it till it goes - about 20 mins. They do give you wind if you use too many a day and you will hiccup if you accidentally bite some off and swallow it!! A drink of water helps to stop the hiccups :)

I couldn't believe the confidence I gained to be up close to people and how I was more relaxed when out somewhere - I didn't feel I needed to sneak out for a quick puff (which I always regretted doing and felt like I smelt awful when I slinked back in the room - which I actually did I guess).

Keep it up mate!

1122034 2010-07-25 08:45:00 From a young age I tried to convince my mum to give up smoking saying it will kill her (well you know that's what the medical profession said must be true?)

About 6 years ago she collapsed in a dairy. The doctor at the hospital that gave her the bad news of "Lung cancer" was not apologetic and fairly cold to my surprise .

I later realised..... Imagine giving that news to 2 or three people a day, and watching them being all upset and seemingly surprised it could happen to them. Must be a VERY frustrating job.

We were very lucky, 9 days later my mum died she had obviously been hiding her symptoms. I am still upset but at least she didnt suffer months like so many do.

Congrats if you have given up this disgusting killer.

1122036 2010-07-25 12:49:00 Think I'll pass the hypnosis. Not too keen on giving some fella root access to my brain.

Had a minor setback tonight, caved and had one about an hour ago. I'm not sure if I'm in the right mindset TBH, only giving up 'cos I have to, not because I want to...

When are you going to give up then?

You are just wasting time, can tell you are not ready to quit. Start smoking again maybe stop when you cough up a bit of lung and some blood when lung has cancer

It doesn't work. I tried it.

You are etc etc - no.
Went outside desperate for a smoke.

This forum had a similar thread a year or so ago, and I admitted then to having had a habit of 90 a day (yes, 90)! In 1984 I visited a clinical psychologist in Christchurch who used hypnotherapy to alter my perceptions and trigger various responses that enabled me to cope with the stopping process. I was able to stop cold turkey, and haven't had a cigarette since.

Two things. 1) I'm sure I must have wanted to quit, and 2) I'm not sure that a hypnotherapist alone may have had the same success. As a clinical psychologist, his treatment involved altering some core beliefs of mine - really deep down stuff.

Whatever, that was the best 45 minutes and $70 I ever spent - a one off session that has been of benefit to me ever since.

1122042 2010-07-25 22:05:00 When I was doing my PPL training years ago I flew with a smoker on navexes around the North Island.
He couldnt smoke on the plane, as PIC after 2 hours of flying and landing he would taxi really quickly and rush his shutdown checks. Then leap from the plane and sprint to a place he could smoke.
I havent seen him for years but no way could he have ever given up smoking.
