1121198 2010-07-22 22:55:00 There are good cyclists and then there are the one's that give everyone a bad name, just as there are bad inconsiderate car users.

Dropped my daughter off at school just this morning and she crossed the road with with the school lollypop signs out and almost got wiped out by a group of 5 racing cyclists with there bums up and heads down, riding as a pack at probably 30k plus between the parked cars and the traffic, went around and through the group of children crossing the road, only thing that saved a couple of the smaller kids was that the teacher on duty managed to grab a couple and pull them out of the way.

But I am not controlled by the calming effects of oestrogen, I just want to smash him up.

Not like you at all,a tactful answer!

I wonder if a length of .032" lockwire across the road would teach them a lesson.
I feel sorry for the good guy cyclists like JC who takes the flak because of **** for brain cyclists.

1121201 2010-07-22 23:50:00 And in some situations, the aggro is caused by a cyclist riding without considering the traffic around him (and yes, it's usually a 'him'!!!). Serious cyclists hate these idiots as much as non-cyclist motorists - because they give all of us a bad name.

These are the same guys that would buy a Harley if they could afford one :p

I suppose the lollypops were pivoting on a lamp post. The old ones could have brought that bunch down easily.

Personally, I wouldnt recommend giving bad cyclists any abuse(or the finger) as they tend to be fit, strong & aggro

But the reality is that its the MAJORITY of cyclists who think they are above the road rules. We all see them driving though red lights & riding though pedestrians when the pedestrian xing lights are on at intersections

Its time for some compulsory regulations(Just like helmets), its about minimizing risk, not appointing blame.
-Cyclists should wear bright colored clothing/vest (not an issue for the lycra brigade) dark grey clothing an on wet dark day is just asking for trouble
-a flashing led light would also really help. These are dirt cheap. Motorcyclists have known for years this helps stay alive , why so few bikes have LED hedlights in daytime I dont know-at least in urban/city centres.
-should ALL high risk sports be made to contribute to the hospital/medical costs involved in their sporting accidents ??

I'm not anti bike BTW (I have 2).

Do you mount them on the wall with a note of date, where hit etc . or in a trophy cabinet?
I just kick 'em off to the side as a warning deterrent to try and alleviate the plague . Johcar when driving probably salvages the bike bits and being a tidy Kiwi, puts the busted bike bits and cyclist in the bin . I used to, but some of the ingrates kick a bit when you are binning them .

No problem you are in a vehicle and have a wheel brace under the seat so any aggressive cyclists can be easily dealt to. The most he will have is a flimsy bike pump, pump versus wheel brace no contest.
You cant force any more regulations on cyclists except helmets.

Thats defeatist talk
The regs used to be ALOT stricter, reflectors, white strip a certain size, even mudguards/fenders used to be compolsory.

Current regs
www.nzta.govt.nz

You must have a rear reflector that is visible from a distance of 100 metres when light shines on it (eg a car's headlights).
You can only ride on the footpath if you're delivering newspapers, mail or leaflets.
If you're riding with other cyclists, don't ride more than two abreast. Ride in single file when you're passing other vehicles - including parked vehicles, or when you're impeding traffic behind you.
At intersections, you must follow the same road rules as motor vehicles, or get off your cycle and walk across.

1121207 2010-07-23 01:42:00 There would be very very few cyclists who ride to deliberately 'piss off' motorists (they would spend a lot of time in hospital if they did).
That's probably true but some aren't very bright. At the south end of Masterton the bridge there has a cycle/pedestrian lane that has a barrier yet some twits still ride in the car lane. Not very bright on a bridge.
